Tech Holds Firm as 10-Year Yield Climbs Toward 5.289%
Can Tech Keep Rising as the 10-Year Yield Nears 5.289%?
Stocks stabilized into a mostly flat finish after a sharp midday reversal tied to headlines around a possible phased reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The bigger conflict is that equities, especially technology, are still holding up even as the United States 10 Year Treasury Yield pushes higher and keeps pressure on stocks, metals, and other rate-sensitive assets.
In One Minute
The market started weak, with the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) moving lower and settling into bearish consolidation as Treasury yields continued climbing. Then the Strait of Hormuz headlines hit around midday, SPY reversed sharply higher, and much of the early weakness disappeared. The problem is that SPY ran directly into declining resistance near $768.55, while the United States 10 Year Treasury Yield (US10Y) continues moving toward 5.289%. Technology remains surprisingly resilient; the Nasdaq Composite Index (IXIC) is holding support near 26,700 points, and Bitcoin versus U.S. Dollar (BTCUSD) is sitting just below a major $88,000 to $89,000 breakout zone.
The Setup
The market is dealing with two forces at the same time.
The first is geopolitical headlines. Reports around a possible reopening of the Strait of Hormuz caused a fast intraday shift in sentiment, even though Iran later denied the information. SPY had opened lower, failed to complete its gap fill, and moved into bearish consolidation. Around 12:10 PM, one 10-minute candle changed the tone completely. Buyers pushed price back toward the gap and eventually into the declining trend line that has been controlling price since the recent all-time high. That trend line is still resistance near $768.55, and after-hours price was already beginning to pull back again.
The second force is interest rates. The 10-year yield has moved sharply higher over the last two sessions, yet equities have not reacted as negatively as we would normally expect, particularly technology and companies with heavy capital spending requirements.
Rate expectations have also moved higher. The probability of an October rate increase is 68%, while the probability for another increase in December sits in the mid-50 % range. That keeps the possibility of two additional increases before year-end in play.
The next major yield resistance is 5.289%. Momentum is already stretched, with RSI at 75.69 on the daily chart and 78.17 on the weekly chart, but the strength of the move means that level still matters.
What Changed
The Nasdaq Composite Index (IXIC) made new all-time highs earlier this week and then pulled back directly toward the breakout area. That gives us a classic breakout, retrace, and possible bounce setup. Near-term support is around 26,700 points. As long as that area holds, the Nasdaq still has room to make another move higher.
The VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) also recovered from early weakness. It gapped lower, formed bearish consolidation, then reversed with the broader market. Resistance remains at $607.58, which is the 61.8% Fibonacci retracement from the all-time high down to the recent low.
One important difference is that SMH has not fully retraced back to the upper boundary of its larger parallel channel yet. Even if semiconductors continue higher, the setup still allows for roughly four to seven trading days of consolidation before another sustained move.
In precious metals, higher yields are creating pressure. Gold (GOLD) failed to hold its rising parallel channel and moved lower again. If weakness continues, the next support is $4,227. Silver (SILVER) also broke beneath its rising trend line. If price confirms another lower close, that broken trend line becomes resistance at $64.75. The next support below is $61.03.
Energy is more mixed. US Oil (USOIL) initially moved lower on the Strait of Hormuz news, but the shorter-term chart also has an inverse head and shoulders pattern. Resistance is around $97.43, which lines up with the 50% area of the larger parallel structure and the upper range of the September 21 candle.
Natural Gas (NATGAS) produced one of the strongest moves. Price broke decisively through a declining trend line that had rejected several earlier attempts and pushed toward the June 1 pivot highs. The next step is confirmation. Natural Gas needs to push higher and close above the current breakout candle to strengthen the move. It is already overbought in the near term, so consolidation would be normal. The next larger objective sits near the lower boundary of the parallel channel, just under $3.60.
Among individual stocks, First Solar, Inc. (FSLR) remains under pressure as rates move higher. The stock broke beneath the rising parallel structure that had supported price since the April 2025 lows, retraced back toward that broken structure, then faded again and developed a bear flag.
If the decline continues, $160.30 becomes important. That level combines a Fibonacci retracement with a gap fill, making it the next area where a near-term bounce could develop.
Everpure, Inc. (P) moved sharply higher following its September 22 inclusion in the S&P 500 Index (SPX). Price broke through the upper boundary of a parallel channel that had capped the stock since May 2023.
That same channel rejected price in November 2025 before the stock eventually pulled back, found support around the 50% area of the channel, and then accelerated into the current breakout. The latest move closed near another trend line created by connecting previous pivot highs, so price has now reached another technical decision area.
Hewlett Packard Enterprise Company (HPE) reached a new all-time high at $65.48 before pulling back and closing around and below the previous all-time high from June 2026.
The larger structure is still constructive. HPE has been consolidating around a declining trend line; the previous session closed above it, and the latest session remained above the breakout area. That strengthens the possibility that HPE is preparing for another move higher. The stock is also beginning to move into price discovery, where future resistance will increasingly depend on newly developing price structures and extensions from previous pivot highs.
Meta Platforms, Inc. (META) has made an explosive move following a breakout, retrace, and continuation setup. Price is now approaching its previous all-time high at $796.25. The larger parallel channel has controlled much of Meta's price action since December 2023. Price temporarily moved beneath that structure, recovered back inside it, and then accelerated higher.
Now location matters. Meta is approaching the 50% area of that larger channel while also nearing the previous all-time high. That creates a potential double top area at the same time momentum is becoming overbought.
The strongest near-term outcome would be bullish consolidation just below $800. Price could also briefly move above $800 and then settle into several days of sideways action or pullback before making another attempt higher. Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) recently followed a similar pattern by reaching new all-time highs, pulling back, then pushing to new highs again.
Digital Assets and Crypto
Bitcoin versus U.S. Dollar (BTCUSD) has been relatively quiet, but technically it is sitting at one of the most important areas of the year. Near-term resistance is $89,021. Support is $80,594.
Those levels are tied to the rising neckline from the previous head and shoulders structure that has influenced Bitcoin since January. That neckline is the key barrier. A sustained move above it would represent an important structural change and would make future pullbacks more interesting as possible continuation setups.
The broader breakout area for next week is roughly $88,000 to $89,000. Bitcoin has also built clean weekly consolidation beneath that zone. Bulls do not want to see price fall back toward or below approximately $80,500, with the more precise support at $80,594. That area is the lower boundary Bitcoin needs to defend if the current move is going to remain intact.
The longer-term chart matters as well. Bitcoin nearly produced a yearly candle with a long upper wick last year, showing significant rejection from the highs. Reclaiming the current neckline would therefore be more than a short-term breakout. It would represent an important technical accomplishment within the larger structure.
Why It Matters
The most important relationship right now is the gap between rising yields and resilient technology stocks.
A move toward 5.289% on the 10-year yield increases pressure on financing costs, housing-sensitive assets, companies carrying significant debt, and businesses that depend heavily on capital spending. Yet the Nasdaq, semiconductors, Meta, and HPE are still holding relatively strong.
That resilience matters, but it does not remove the risk. Gold and silver are already showing what higher yields can do. First Solar is also feeling the pressure. Meanwhile, geopolitical headlines around the Strait of Hormuz are creating another layer of volatility for oil and the broader equity market.
Bitcoin is dealing with its own technical decision point near $88,000 to $89,000, making this a market where several major assets are approaching resistance at the same time.
Key Levels
| Asset | Current Area | Support | Resistance or Target | What Matters |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) | Declining trend line | $768.55 | Needs to clear declining resistance | |
| Nasdaq Composite Index (IXIC) | Breakout retrace | 26,700 points | Support needs to hold | |
| United States 10 Year Treasury Yield (US10Y) | Strong upside momentum | 5.289% | RSI 75.69 daily, 78.17 weekly | |
| VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) | Recovering | Parallel channel area | $607.58 | 61.8% Fibonacci resistance |
| Gold (GOLD) | Below rising channel | $4,227 | Broken channel structure | Higher yields remain pressure |
| Silver (SILVER) | Below rising trend line | $61.03 | $64.75 | Broken trend line becomes resistance |
| US Oil (USOIL) | Inverse head and shoulders area | $97.43 | 50% area and September 21 range | |
| Natural Gas (NATGAS) | Trend line breakout | Breakout structure | Just under $3.60 | Needs breakout confirmation |
| First Solar, Inc. (FSLR) | Bear flag and fade | $160.30 | Broken parallel structure | Fibonacci level plus gap fill |
| Hewlett Packard Enterprise Company (HPE) | Near price discovery | Breakout area | $65.48 recent high | Needs to build above prior highs |
| Meta Platforms, Inc. (META) | Near all-time high | $796.25 and around $800 | Double top, channel midpoint, overbought | |
| Bitcoin versus U.S. Dollar (BTCUSD) | Weekly consolidation | $80,594 | $89,021 | $88,000 to $89,000 neckline is critical |
The most important levels for the broader market are SPY near $768.55, the Nasdaq around 26,700 points, the 10-year yield at 5.289%, and Bitcoin around $88,000 to $89,000. Those four areas tell us whether risk appetite is strengthening or whether resistance is beginning to win.
Bull Case
For equities, the bull case starts with the Nasdaq holding around 26,700 points and SPY eventually clearing its declining resistance near $768.55. If technology continues absorbing higher yields, the broader market can remain supported.
SMH would strengthen further above $607.58, although several days of consolidation may still be needed.
HPE remains constructive as long as the breakout structure holds and price continues building above its prior consolidation. Meta can stay bullish if it consolidates beneath $800 instead of breaking sharply lower.
Natural Gas strengthens its breakout if it pushes higher and closes above the current breakout candle, opening the path toward the lower parallel boundary just under $3.60.
Bitcoin strengthens materially if it can reclaim and hold the $88,000 to $89,000 neckline area, with $89,021 as the specific near-term resistance.
Bear Case
The main macro risk is the 10-year yield continuing toward 5.289%. Higher yields would keep pressure on rate-sensitive stocks, precious metals, housing-related assets, and companies with significant financing needs.
SPY remains vulnerable while it stays beneath $768.55. Silver becomes more technically damaged if it confirms below the broken trend line, with $61.03 as the next support. Gold has $4,227 beneath the current structure.
First Solar remains weak while the bear flag and breakdown structure stay intact, with $160.30 as the next potential bounce area. Meta could stall around $796.25 to $800 because that zone combines the previous all-time high, the 50% area of the larger channel, a possible double top, and an overbought condition.
Bitcoin weakens if it falls back toward or below approximately $80,500, with $80,594 as the more precise support that buyers need to defend.
What to Watch Next
The first thing I am watching is the 10-year yield. A move toward 5.289% would test whether technology can continue ignoring the pressure from higher rates. On SPY, $768.55 remains the immediate resistance. On the Nasdaq, 26,700 points is the breakout area that needs to keep holding.
In semiconductors, $607.58 remains the next important resistance for SMH. Gold needs to defend $4,227, while silver needs to deal with resistance at $64.75 and support at $61.03. Oil has $97.43 as the next important resistance. Natural Gas needs confirmation above its breakout candle before the move toward just under $3.60 becomes more convincing.
First Solar has $160.30 below. Meta is approaching $796.25 and the larger $800 area. HPE is trying to establish itself above previous all-time high territory. And Bitcoin remains one of the cleaner technical decisions on the board: $89,021 above, $80,594 below, and the broader $88,000 to $89,000 neckline in between.
Bottom Line
The market is still showing resilience, but that resilience is being tested by rising Treasury yields and headline-driven geopolitical volatility. Technology remains strong, precious metals are feeling the pressure, energy is moving on its own technical setups, and Bitcoin is approaching a major neckline that could determine its next larger move.
The key relationship is simple: watch whether stocks can keep holding up while the 10-year yield pushes toward 5.289%. With several major assets sitting directly at support or resistance, this is a market where patience and price confirmation matter more than chasing the first move.
