Tech and Semiconductors Surge as High Yields Test the Rally
Can Tech Keep Rallying While Treasury Yields Stay Near 5%?
Stocks are pushing higher, led by technology and semiconductors, with the S&P 500 Index (SPX) up 1.55% and the Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) up 2.77%. The opportunity is growing momentum across risk assets, but the market is now approaching important resistance while Treasury yields remain close to 5%.
In One Minute
Technology is driving the market higher, with semiconductors confirming a meaningful change in trend and Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) already breaking into new all-time highs. The main risk is that the S&P 500 rally came on only about 49 million shares of volume in the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY), so participation was not especially strong. QQQ is approaching $748.65, the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) is targeting $607.58, and the 10-year Treasury yield remains close enough to 5% to keep pressure on valuations. Bitcoin (BTC) has joined the move with a 7.64% surge, but $89,228 is now the major resistance level.
The Setup
The broader setup is a market showing surprising resilience despite elevated Treasury yields.
The Cboe 10 Year Treasury Note Yield Index (TNX) recently reached 5.021%. Yields have pulled back, but they have not collapsed. The earlier expectation was that one additional rate increase, with perhaps another later, could allow yields to move between 4.809% and 5.021%.
With the possibility of two additional increases now in play, I am not expecting a move all the way back to 4.809% anytime soon. The first area I am watching is 4.876%. If that holds, yields could turn higher again toward 5.021%.
The next major macro test will be the new inflation data next month.
What Changed
The S&P 500 Index gained 1.55% and moved above its declining trend line. That is technically important, but volume was not particularly strong. SPY traded about 49 million shares, which is not the kind of heavy participation I normally associate with a powerful breakout.
Even so, SPY now has $779.37 directly in play. After the size of this gap and push higher, that level is close enough to become the next major test.
QQQ was even stronger, rising 2.77%. Unlike the S&P 500, which had to fight through its declining trend line, QQQ gapped above its trend line, came back toward it, held it as support, and accelerated higher. The next destination is $748.65.
SMH may be the most important confirmation signal.
The semiconductor ETF gapped above the top of its old parallel channel, sold back toward that former resistance, held it as support, and then rallied through the August 17 gap area. It has now posted three consecutive advancing sessions for the first time since its all-time high.
SMH also has two consecutive daily closes above its 50-day simple moving average. The 20-day simple moving average is currently at $559.60. If the 20-day average gets above the 50-day average, that would strengthen the momentum further.
The next resistance is $607.58. Another daily close above the current breakout structure would add confirmation. After that, I would watch any controlled retracement toward the top of the former parallel channel because that area needs to hold as support.
Gold (XAUUSD) and Silver (XAGUSD) both moved lower even with yields declining. Oil also fell, reducing some of the immediate inflation concern that normally supports precious metals as a hedge.
Gold returned to the bottom of its weekly parallel channel. A 10-minute candle pierced that boundary, recovered, and price then moved sideways. For now, the channel is holding.
The risk is repeated testing. If gold keeps hitting that support, the level can weaken. The next support is the September 16 low at $4,234, which also aligns with an inclining trend line.
Silver is also slightly lower but remains above its recent declining trend line. Support is $64.32. On the upside, silver needs to consolidate and eventually break through the large red candle pivot at $67.94.
Technology stocks produced some of the strongest individual moves.
Arm Holdings plc (ARM) surged 17%. Its earlier breakout initially failed, followed by three sessions beneath the declining trend line. Thursday produced another breakout candle, Friday confirmed it, and instead of retracing, ARM accelerated.
Price is now back in the upper 50% of the inclining parallel channel that has contained it since December 2024. The next resistance is $3,3604. If ARM closes above the current candle and maintains the breakout, the 50% area near $3,189 becomes an important retracement level.
Intel Corporation (INTC) also extended its breakout. Price pushed through the gap area and is now moving toward the upper boundary of the parallel channel that has contained it since January 2023.
The first resistance is near $128.76. Beyond that, the upper boundary reaches $142.19 by October 12. If momentum continues, Intel could pause and then attempt to push toward the all-time highs, but I would expect significant resistance near the top of that channel.
Meta Platforms, Inc. (META) surged 11.34%. The earlier September 15 breakout confirmed, continued higher, and then successfully retested the breakout trend line.
Meta moved from around $660 on Friday toward $740, roughly an $80 per share move. The immediate resistance is $743, where price produced a significant upper wick and closed below the level.
If Meta gaps above $743, the next path leads toward the 50% area of its larger parallel channel, which also aligns with the all-time high region. The smaller gap near $750 was already reached, so that gap is no longer an outstanding technical target.
AMD produced the clearest momentum signal by breaking to a new all-time high.
AMD closed above a declining trend line on September 17. Instead of retracing to test that breakout, price accelerated, gapped into the previous all-time high, and continued higher.
AMD is now in price discovery. The next resistance from the longer term inclining trend line is around $620 this week and approximately $625 next week. If AMD gaps above that area, there is very little nearby resistance on the longer-term chart, and shorter-timeframe structures would become more useful.
United Parcel Service, Inc. (UPS) moved in the opposite direction, falling 4.35%.
The stock is now close to previous April and May pivots. The more important weekly support sits near $85.98, based on a long-term trend line from the March 9 low through the September 2025 pivots.
That area could create another opportunity to test the sharply declining resistance trend line above. That trend line has already been hit three times, and a fourth test carries a 50 50 possibility of breaking higher.
UPS traded above $230 previously and is now below $100, but the important issue is not simply that it is cheaper. The technical entry area I am watching is just below $86.
Digital Assets and Crypto
Bitcoin surged 7.64%, and the structure changed quickly.
Only four trading days ago, Bitcoin was in the lower 50% of its declining parallel channel and testing whether the measured move could break down.
The August 23 low at $75,538 was critical. Bitcoin closed above that level on September 15, which kept the near-term structure positive. A close below $75,538 would have shifted the probabilities toward more downside, but that did not happen.
Instead, Bitcoin remained supported and accelerated higher.
The weekly chart now puts $89,228 directly in focus. That level comes from an inclining trend line forming the neckline of a large head and shoulders pattern.
I expect resistance around $89,228. After a 7.64% surge and four strong trading sessions, Bitcoin could consolidate sideways or pull back modestly around that area.
The key is how Bitcoin behaves at resistance. Holding the recent gains and consolidating beneath $89,228 would preserve a much stronger structure than a sharp rejection back through the breakout.
Why It Matters
Technology is not moving higher in isolation. The S&P 500 has broken above its declining trend line, QQQ has already turned that former resistance into support, and SMH is beginning to confirm a broader semiconductor breakout.
That gives the rally more technical credibility.
The conflict is that Treasury yields remain elevated. A move from 4.876% back toward 5.021% could become an important test for the same technology stocks that are currently leading.
Gold and silver are also showing how different parts of the market are reacting. Lower yields would normally help precious metals, but weaker oil reduced some of the inflation-hedge demand.
Bitcoin is participating in the broader risk move, but it is now approaching a major technical barrier of its own.
Key Levels
| Asset | Current Area | Support | Resistance or Target | What Matters |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SPY | Breakout above declining trend line | Former trend line | $779.37 | Breakout came on about 49 million shares |
| QQQ | Up 2.77% | Breakout trend line | $748.65 | Former resistance held as support |
| SMH | Above 50-day average | Former parallel channel | $607.58 | 20-day average at $559.60 |
| TNX | Below 5% | 4.876%, then 4.809% | 5.021% | Elevated yields remain a market risk |
| Gold | Bottom of weekly channel | $4,234 | Channel recovery | Repeated tests could weaken support |
| Silver | Above inclining trend line | $64.32 | $67.94 | Needs consolidation and breakout |
| ARM | Up 17% | $3,189 | $3,3604 | Breakout accelerated without retrace |
| Intel | Breakout continuation | Gap area | $128.76, then $142.19 | Upper channel remains major resistance |
| Meta | Around $740 | Breakout trend line | $743, then all-time high region | $750 gap already reached |
| AMD | New all-time high | Breakout structure | $620, then $625 next week | Price discovery |
| UPS | Below $100 | $85.98 | Declining trend line | Fourth resistance test has a 50/50 breakout possibility |
| Bitcoin | Up 7.64% | $75,538 | $89,228 | Major neckline resistance |
The most important levels for the broader market are QQQ at $748.65, SMH at $607.58, the 10-year yield around 4.876% and 5.021%, and Bitcoin at $89,228. Those levels will tell us whether the current momentum can continue or whether the market needs to digest these moves.
Bull Case
For the bullish setup to continue, SPY needs to stay above its declining trend line and push toward $779.37.
QQQ needs to hold its breakout structure and continue toward $748.65.
SMH is especially important. Holding above the former parallel channel, maintaining consecutive closes above the 50-day average, and eventually clearing $607.58 would strengthen the broader technology move. A 20-day moving average move above the 50-day average would add another positive signal.
Gold needs to keep holding its weekly channel. Silver needs to stay above $64.32 and eventually clear $67.94.
ARM needs to maintain the breakout and eventually clear $3,3604. Intel needs to push through $128.76 before challenging $142.19. Meta needs to clear $743. AMD needs to continue holding its price discovery structure above the old all-time high.
Bitcoin needs to hold the recent breakout and handle $89,228 without giving back the structure created over the last four trading sessions.
UPS becomes more interesting if it reaches the $85.98 area and stabilizes there.
Bear Case
The first warning would be failed breakouts.
If SPY falls back beneath its declining trend line, the current breakout loses credibility, particularly because volume was not especially strong.
A QQQ failure back below its breakout trend line would weaken the technology setup.
For SMH, failure to hold the former parallel channel or the 50-day moving average would weaken one of the most important confirmation signals in the market.
A rebound in the 10 year yield from 4.876% toward 5.021% could increase pressure on technology valuations.
Gold becomes more vulnerable if repeated channel tests finally break, with $4,234 becoming the next support. Silver weakness would put $64.32 directly in play.
ARM, Intel, Meta, and AMD are all extended enough that resistance matters. ARM faces $3,3604, Intel faces $128.76 and ultimately $142.19, Meta still has to prove it can clear $743, and AMD is approaching $620 and $625.
Bitcoin could also pull back from $89,228. The more serious change would be a breakdown that begins reversing the structure built after holding $75,538.
UPS remains under pressure unless it can stabilize, with $85.98 still the primary support area.
What to Watch Next
The first thing I am watching is whether SPY and QQQ can follow through after their breakouts.
SMH is the next major confirmation. A close above the current breakout structure and continued strength toward $607.58 would support the broader technology rally.
Treasury yields remain central. I am watching 4.876% as possible support and 5.021% as the next major upside test. The next inflation data next month will be important for that relationship.
Gold needs to continue holding its weekly channel. Silver needs to defend $64.32 and work toward $67.94.
For individual technology stocks, the key tests are ARM at $3,3604, Intel at $128.76 and $142.19, Meta at $743, and AMD around $620 this week and $625 next week.
Bitcoin at $89,228 is the major crypto test.
Bottom Line
Technology and semiconductors are leading a meaningful improvement in market structure, but they are now running directly into important resistance while Treasury yields remain elevated. QQQ at $748.65, SMH at $607.58, the 10-year yield between 4.876% and 5.021%, and Bitcoin at $89,228 are the levels that matter most from here.
Momentum is strong, but this is where patience matters: let price confirm the breakout, respect resistance, and do not chase simply because the market is moving fast.
