S&P 500 Pushes Higher as Yields Approach a Critical Resistance Zone
Can the S&P 500 keep climbing as Treasury yields test resistance?
The Week Ahead: Stocks are still holding a bullish structure, with the S&P 500 Index (SPX) staying above its key support zone even as Treasury yields remain elevated and crude oil stays near $95 per barrel. The bigger market question this week is whether yields and oil begin to cool enough to give equities room for another push higher.
In One Minute
The S&P 500 Index (SPX) remains bullish above 7,575, with 7,770 as the immediate breakout level, 7,800 as the next target, and 8,000 as the larger objective. The United States 10 Year Treasury Yield (US10Y) is approaching major resistance around 5.25% to 5.27%, while West Texas Intermediate Crude Oil (USOIL) is forming a bearish continuation pattern that keeps $80 in play over the next several weeks. Gold and silver are sitting near channel support, Bitcoin (BTC) has improved structurally but may still retest $81,000, and large technology names remain a major reason the broader market continues to hold up. The Setup
The market is still behaving better than you might expect considering the pressure coming from interest rates and energy.
SPX is only about 1.5% below its all-time highs while the 10-year yield is near 5.2% and crude oil is still around $95 per barrel. That tells me buyers are still willing to step in, especially in the largest technology and artificial intelligence companies.
The market is not equally strong underneath the surface. Only a smaller group of companies is doing most of the heavy lifting, but those companies are large enough to keep the major indexes supported. Meta Platforms, Inc. (META), Apple Inc. (AAPL), Microsoft Corporation (MSFT), and NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA) remain important pieces of that structure. Pasted markdown
The main line I am watching on SPX is still 7,575. As long as price stays above that level, I remain bullish. We briefly pierced it during the sharp afternoon selloff, but the weakness did not hold, and the market recovered quickly.
The next important resistance is 7,770. A clean break above that level opens the door toward 7,800, with 8,000 remaining the larger target by mid-October if this structure continues. A move below roughly 7,400 would change the near-term picture and open the possibility of 7,000 or lower. Pasted markdown
What Changed
The S&P has now pushed above a descending resistance line that connected several previous highs. More importantly, price came back to that line and continued holding around it rather than collapsing back below it.
That keeps the breakout intact.
The Treasury market is moving in the opposite direction. The United States 10 Year Treasury Yield (US10Y) produced a strong move higher, consolidated, and then broke out again. The next major area is approximately 5.25% to 5.27%.
If yields reach that area and pull back toward 5%, that would fit almost perfectly with the bullish equity setup. Stocks can tolerate high yields for a while, but continued acceleration in rates would eventually become much harder for the market to absorb. Pasted markdown
Crude oil is giving us the inverse setup.
West Texas Intermediate Crude Oil (USOIL) has pulled back and is now forming a bear flag, a sharp move down followed by a smaller consolidation. That keeps the downside target near $80 per barrel over the next several weeks to roughly one month.
Oil recently rejected an important resistance area where major trend lines intersected. As long as that rejection remains intact, the technical structure continues to favor lower prices. Pasted markdown
Gold (GOLD) remains inside a rising channel and is currently testing support near the lower boundary. As long as that line holds, the structure remains constructive, and gold can continue working higher inside the channel. If support breaks, the downside risk opens toward $3,900.
Silver (SILVER) has a nearly identical setup. It is sitting near the lower boundary of its rising channel. If that support holds, the structure remains intact. If it breaks, the next downside target is $55 per ounce. Pasted markdown
Micron Technology, Inc. (MU) still has room higher toward an unfilled gap. That target also lines up closely with the 0.786 Fibonacci retracement measured from the previous major high to the major low. If Micron reaches that area, I would stop looking at it as something to chase higher and start watching for a potential small short setup.
NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA) remains rangebound inside an upward sloping structure with slowly converging boundaries. There is no strong directional advantage inside that pattern yet. As long as NVIDIA does not break down, it continues to support the broader artificial intelligence trade and the major indexes.
Meta Platforms, Inc. (META) is different. Meta had an extraordinary move of roughly 40% despite already being about a $2 trillion company. I think the stock may have reached a short-term top. The former resistance area below the current price now becomes the logical downside target and potential buyable support if Meta continues pulling back. Pasted markdown
Digital Assets and Crypto
Bitcoin (BTC) has made an important technical change. It broke its larger descending trend line, consolidated, broke higher again, and then produced a higher high. That matters because a trend change becomes more credible once price starts making higher highs and higher lows.
That raises the possibility that the previous bearish cycle bottom is already in. But I would not expect Bitcoin to move straight higher from here.
The first major support I am watching is approximately $81,000. That area was resistance before Bitcoin broke above it, so now it needs to prove that former resistance can become support.
If Bitcoin pulls back toward $81,000 and buyers defend it, the structure continues to favor another move higher. If $81,000 fails, the next important support is around $75,500. That area previously attracted buyers repeatedly before the breakout.
So the probability still leans bullish, but Bitcoin now needs to prove that the breakout can survive a normal pullback. Pasted markdown
Why It Matters
These markets are starting to line up around the same larger idea. If SPX stays above 7,575, yields reach 5.25% to 5.27% and then retreat toward 5%, and oil continues working lower toward $80, the pressure on equities begins to ease from several directions at once.
That would give the market a much cleaner path toward 7,800 and possibly 8,000. Gold and silver are telling us something different. Both are sitting at important support rather than breaking out. Their next move depends on whether those channel floors continue to hold.
Bitcoin is also at a confirmation stage. The breakout has improved the structure, but the real test is whether buyers appear around $81,000.
Key Levels
| Asset | Current Area | Support | Resistance or Target | What Matters |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 Index (SPX) | 7,743 | 7,575 | 7,770, 7,800, 8,000 | Above 7,575 keeps the bullish structure intact |
| SPX bearish threshold | 7,400 | 7,000 or lower | Below roughly 7,400 changes the near-term structure | |
| United States 10 Year Treasury Yield (US10Y) | Near 5.2% | 5% | 5.25% to 5.27% | A pullback toward 5% would support equities |
| West Texas Intermediate Crude Oil (USOIL) | Around $95 | $80 | Bear flag keeps downside pressure intact | |
| Gold (GOLD) | Channel support | Rising channel floor | Higher within channel | Break of support exposes $3,900 |
| Silver (SILVER) | Channel support | Rising channel floor | Higher within channel | Break of support exposes $55 |
| Bitcoin (BTC) | Pullback phase | $81,000, then $75,500 | Higher after support confirmation | $81,000 needs to hold as former resistance |
| Micron Technology, Inc. (MU) | Below target | Gap fill near 0.786 Fibonacci level | Target becomes a possible short area | |
| NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA) | Rising wedge | Lower wedge boundary | Upper wedge boundary | No clear bias until structure breaks |
| Meta Platforms, Inc. (META) | Pulling back | Former breakout area | Former resistance becomes potential support |
The two most important levels for the broader market are 7,575 on SPX and 5.25% to 5.27% on the 10-year yield. SPX holding support while yields begin to retreat would strengthen the bullish case considerably.
Bull Case
The bullish case starts with SPX holding above 7,575 and breaking through 7,770. That would put 7,800 directly in play and keep the larger 8,000 target alive. A Treasury yield move into 5.25% to 5.27% followed by a retreat toward 5% would remove some pressure from equities.
Oil continuing lower toward $80 would reinforce that setup. Gold and silver remain constructive as long as their rising channel support holds. Bitcoin remains bullish if $81,000 acts as support and buyers defend the breakout.
Micron can continue toward its gap and 0.786 Fibonacci target, while NVIDIA staying inside its rising structure helps keep the artificial intelligence trade intact.
Bear Case
The bearish case begins if SPX loses 7,575 and then breaks below roughly 7,400. That would materially weaken the near-term structure and expose 7,000 or lower. Continued acceleration in Treasury yields beyond the 5.25% to 5.27% area would increase pressure on equities rather than relieve it.
Gold breaking its rising channel support opens the door toward $3,900. Silver breaking its channel support puts $55 per ounce in play. Bitcoin losing $81,000 would shift attention to $75,500.
Meta already looks vulnerable to more downside toward its former breakout zone, and NVIDIA would become more concerning if its rising structure finally breaks.
What to Watch Next
The most important economic catalyst this week is the jobs data, which should give us another look at the strength of the United States economy and could influence Treasury yields, equities, gold, and silver. Pasted markdown
Technically, I am watching four confirmations: SPX above 7,770, the 10-year yield near 5.25% to 5.27%, oil continuing its bear flag toward $80, and Bitcoin testing $81,000.
Those levels should tell us whether the current market relationships are still working together or beginning to separate.
Bottom Line
The market remains bullish, but the setup depends heavily on rates and energy cooperating. SPX above 7,575 keeps the upside path open toward 7,800 and eventually 8,000, while a Treasury pullback toward 5% and oil moving toward $80 would make that path much easier.
Gold and silver are sitting on support, Bitcoin needs to prove $81,000 can hold, and the large technology names remain the main engine keeping the broader market together.
This is not the time to chase every move. Let the levels confirm the next step, stay patient, and make price prove the thesis.
