Rising Treasury Yields Test the S&P 500’s Bullish Resilience
Can the S&P 500 stay bullish if Treasury yields keep rising?
Stocks are trying to stabilize, but Treasury yields remain the main force controlling every short-term move in the S&P 500. The bigger tension is that the headline index remains technically bullish near its highs, while equal-weight stocks, commodities, and rate-sensitive parts of the market show much more strain.
In One Minute
S&P 500 E-mini Futures (ES1!) are up about 0.25%, but the market continues to move almost tick for tick with the US 10 Year Treasury Yield (US10Y). Yields surged to 5.34% overnight, pushing futures lower, then eased, allowing stocks to recover before moving back toward 5.31%. The S&P 500 Index (SPX) remains above its neutral zone and only about 2% below its all-time high, even after six down sessions in seven. The bigger concern is underneath the surface: the Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF (RSP) is down roughly 7%, oil remains above $90, and yields are around levels not seen in more than 20 years. The most important near-term question is whether yields calm down enough for broader market participation to improve. Pasted text Pasted text
The Setup
The S&P 500 is still holding a bullish technical structure because price remains above the neutral zone. Six of the past seven sessions have been negative, but the index is only about 2% off its all-time high. That resilience matters because it is happening with Treasury yields at roughly 20-plus-year highs and crude oil still north of $90 per barrel. Pasted text
The weakness is much more obvious in the equal weight market. The Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF (RSP) is down about 7% from its all-time high compared with roughly 2% for the traditional S&P 500. Many equal-weight stocks are also trading below their 50-day moving averages. That tells me the headline index is being supported heavily by a relatively small group of mega-cap companies. NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA), with roughly $5 trillion in market capitalization in this market snapshot, has enough weight that a 1% move can offset weakness across a very large number of smaller S&P 500 companies.
What Changed
The immediate change is coming from rates. Around 2:00 AM EST, the US 10 Year Treasury Yield pushed as high as 5.34%, and S&P 500 futures sold off sharply at the same time. When yields pulled back, futures recovered. With yields moving back toward 5.31%, equities began slipping again. Pasted text
Weekly jobless claims came in at 197,000, roughly in line with expectations and recent readings. Claims around 200,000 remain historically low, so there is little evidence here of major labor market deterioration. The next major catalyst is the nonfarm payrolls report at 8:30 AM EST. Pasted text
The equal-weight setup is getting interesting around $205 to $204.70. That area brings together former resistance, an unfilled gap, and a 50% Fibonacci retracement. If weakness continues into that zone, it becomes an important place to watch for a rebound in beaten-down S&P 500 names. Pasted text
Quarter-end positioning is also creating sharp reversals. Nike Inc. (NKE) has been pushed toward multidecade and 52-week lows, and additional institutional selling into quarter-end may have added pressure. Earnings are after the close, expectations are already very low, and the setup could become interesting if quarter-end selling fades and buyers return at the start of the new quarter. Pasted text
Fair Isaac Corporation (FICO) already showed how quickly that reversal can happen. After heavy selling, the stock reached a parallel trend line and then jumped from about $592 to nearly $640 in premarket trading, almost a 10% rebound. Pasted text
AGNC Investment Corp. (AGNC) is approaching a confluence area near $8.95, where horizontal support and an ascending trend line come together. The stock is only about $0.13 above that area, and RSI is below 20. When that combination occurs, the historical bounce probability in the data is about 80%. Pasted text
Technology is another important part of the story. Micron Technology Inc. (MU) beat revenue and earnings expectations and raised guidance, but the stock still failed to rally meaningfully because investors were already expecting a strong report. The earnings reaction moved sharply in both directions before settling roughly 1% lower or less. Pasted text Pasted text
I was watching for either a deeper decline into the longer-term daily trend line or a rally into a gap fill for a short. Neither developed. If Micron drops toward $1,015, where the lower gap fill sits, that could create a long setup. Until then, there is no reason to force the trade. Pasted text
The larger Micron risk is future supply. New memory production from additional factories could eventually hit the market at the same time software becomes more efficient. Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL) announced its Argon model, which can improve chip utilization and reduce memory requirements. Semiconductor stocks initially dipped on the news and then recovered, so the market is not treating it as an immediate threat. Pasted text
The longer-term concern is that greater efficiency combined with more memory supply could create a glut. The outlook here is that within roughly one year to a year and a half, memory margins could fall toward 10% to 20% from roughly 80%, with Micron potentially moving toward $300 per share under that scenario. That is a longer-term projection, not an immediate setup. Pasted text
Gold Futures (GC) are trying to bounce, but 4,100 is the level that matters. If 4,100 breaks, the next major downside area is 3,900, and that would open the door toward 3,500. Pasted text
Silver Futures (SI) are sitting in a similar technical position. A break of the current trend line opens the door toward $50 per ounce, possibly slightly below $50. Higher rates and oil staying elevated could weaken the economy, reducing industrial demand for silver. That makes $50 or below the more attractive buying area rather than current prices. Pasted text
Natural Gas Futures (NG) are still holding short-term support after a strong pullback over the past week. The average entry is around $2.90, with the position slightly below that level, but the bullish case remains tied to seasonality and Europe’s natural gas deficit. Pasted text
Crude Oil Futures (CL) remain above $90 per barrel. Combined with high rates, that keeps pressure on the underlying economy. The expectation in this market snapshot is also that the Federal Reserve is likely to raise rates again in October, which would add another layer of pressure if oil remains elevated. Pasted text
Digital Assets and Crypto
Bitcoin (BTC) has barely moved over the past one to two weeks. The structure can be read two ways: it could be a bullish flag, or it could be developing into a smaller bearish flag. There is not enough confirmation yet to choose confidently between the two. Pasted text
Bitcoin Dominance (BTC.D) is giving us more useful information. Bitcoin has stayed relatively flat while alternative cryptocurrencies have started pulling back, and that is pushing Bitcoin dominance higher after its larger breakout. Bitcoin does not need to rally for dominance to continue climbing. Bitcoin could stall or drift slightly lower while altcoins fall much harder. Pasted text
Zcash (ZEC) is a good example of that risk. After a roughly 250% advance, a 30% drawdown would not be unusual. A correction of that size in strongly performing altcoins could continue strengthening Bitcoin dominance even if Bitcoin itself goes nowhere. Pasted text
Why It Matters
This market still looks stronger at the index level than it does underneath. As long as the S&P 500 stays above its neutral zone, the broader technical bias remains bullish. But the 7% decline in equal-weight stocks, weakness below many 50-day moving averages, yields above 5%, and oil above $90 show that financial conditions are clearly pressuring the broader market. Pasted text Pasted text
That same pressure is showing up across commodities and individual stocks. Gold and silver are approaching meaningful support, rate-sensitive names such as AGNC are deeply oversold, and beaten-down stocks such as Nike and FICO are starting to attract attention as quarter-end selling fades.
The technology story is different. Strong earnings are no longer enough by themselves. Micron showed that when expectations are already high, even a beat and raised guidance may not create another leg higher. The longer-term question is whether artificial intelligence keeps consuming ever more hardware, or whether more efficient software and new factory supply eventually change that equation.
Key Levels
| Asset | Current Area | Support | Resistance or Target | What Matters |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 Index (SPX) | About 2% below all-time highs | Neutral zone | All-time highs | Above the neutral zone keeps the bullish bias intact |

| Bitcoin (BTC) | Flat for one to two weeks | Bull flag versus micro bear flag remains unresolved | ||
| Bitcoin Dominance (BTC.D) | Rising | Breakout structure | Stronger dominance can come from altcoin weakness | |
| Zcash (ZEC) | After roughly a 250% advance | A 30% drawdown would not be unusual |
The most important levels are the S&P 500 neutral zone, the $205 to $204.70 area on RSP, 5.34% on the US 10 Year Treasury Yield, 4,100 on gold, $50 on silver, and the $8.95 support area on AGNC.
Bull Case
For the broader market, the bullish case stays intact as long as the S&P 500 holds above its neutral zone and Treasury yields stop pushing higher. If yields ease, that would give the broader market more room to stabilize.
RSP becomes particularly interesting if it reaches $205 to $204.70 and holds that confluence of former resistance, gap support, and the 50% Fibonacci retracement. A rebound there could allow beaten-down S&P 500 names to start outperforming even if the mega caps slow down.
Micron becomes more attractive on a controlled drop toward the $1,015 gap fill. AGNC becomes interesting around $8.95 with RSI already below 20. Natural gas remains constructive while short-term support holds, with seasonality and Europe’s supply deficit supporting the setup.
For Bitcoin, the bullish interpretation remains the possibility that the current sideways structure is a bull flag. That still needs confirmation.
Bear Case
The broader market setup weakens if the S&P 500 loses its neutral zone, especially if Treasury yields continue higher. A sustained move above the recent 5.34% yield area would keep pressure on equities, particularly the weaker equal-weight portion of the market.
Gold becomes more vulnerable below 4,100. A confirmed break opens 3,900 first, then potentially 3,500. Silver could move toward $50 or even slightly below if its trend line fails, especially if high rates and oil begin slowing the economy and reducing industrial demand.
Micron carries a longer-term downside risk if expanding memory supply meets improving software efficiency. Under that scenario, margins could eventually fall toward 10% to 20%, with a longer-term projection toward $300 per share.
Bitcoin also has a bearish interpretation. The current consolidation could be a micro bear flag, and rising Bitcoin dominance could continue even if Bitcoin drifts lower, as long as altcoins fall faster. Zcash is particularly exposed after a roughly 250% advance, where a 30% pullback would not be unusual.
What to Watch Next
The first catalyst is the nonfarm payrolls report at 8:30 AM EST. After jobless claims came in at 197,000, the labor market still looks solid, so the reaction in Treasury yields may matter more than the headline number itself. Pasted text
I am also watching whether the US 10 Year Treasury Yield can stay below the recent 5.34% overnight high, whether the S&P 500 continues holding above its neutral zone, and whether RSP reaches the $205 to $204.70 confluence area.
Nike earnings after the close are another important catalyst, particularly because the stock is already sitting near multidecade and 52-week lows after heavy quarter-end selling.
In commodities, 4,100 on gold and the current silver trend line are the two major technical tests. In crypto, the question is whether Bitcoin resolves its consolidation as a bull flag or a micro bear flag, while Bitcoin dominance tells us whether the pressure is shifting more aggressively toward altcoins.
Bottom Line
The most important relationship right now is still stocks versus Treasury yields. The S&P 500 remains technically bullish above its neutral zone, but the much weaker equal-weight market, oil above $90, and yields above 5% tell us that the pressure underneath the headline index is real.
That means I am not interested in chasing moves. I want price to come to the important levels: RSP around $205 to $204.70, gold around 4,100, silver near its trend line, AGNC around $8.95, Micron near $1,015, and Bitcoin at a confirmed breakout or breakdown from its current consolidation.
Patience matters here because the market is giving us clear levels, but it has not yet given us clear confirmation.
