Rising Treasury Yields Test the S&P 500 Ahead of the Fed
Can the S&P 500 hold as Treasury yields press 5%?
Stocks are under pressure as rising Treasury yields and renewed concerns about artificial intelligence spending weigh on technology, while cybersecurity attracts fresh capital. The bigger question is whether the S&P 500 can keep defending support as the 10 Year Treasury yield presses toward 5%, oil remains elevated, and the Federal Reserve decision looms.
In One Minute
The S&P 500 Index (SPX) is still holding its near-term trend line, but repeated tests are weakening that support. The Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) fell 0.8%, while the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) continues to struggle below its 50-day moving average, keeping me cautious on risk appetite. The United States 10 Year Treasury Yield (US10Y) reached 5.012%, just below the 2023 high of 5.021%, and the probability of a Federal Reserve rate increase Wednesday is above 85%. Oil reached $104.95, gold is testing an important channel, silver is threatening a head-and-shoulders breakdown, and cybersecurity stocks are showing some of the strongest momentum in the market.
The Setup
The broader setup is straightforward. Inflation data has pushed the market toward expecting a Federal Reserve rate increase Wednesday, Treasury yields have reached the 5% area, and technology is absorbing pressure as investors question the pace of artificial intelligence infrastructure spending.
The S&P 500 is still holding together technically. It opened below its trend line, made several attempts to move back above it, eventually broke through on lighter volume, and then weakened again later in the session. The important part is that it still closed above that trend line.
Near-term support is 760.40. That level has been tested several times, which makes each new test more important because repeated touches can weaken support. The next level underneath is around 7.55, near previous July pivot highs.
QQQ fell 0.8%, but it has not broken below the August lows. The next important support is the gap fill around $700, which is also a major psychological level. With QQQ around $709, a move toward $700 could attract buyers.
SMH remains one of the more important signals for overall risk appetite. It has been unable to establish itself above the 50-day moving average, while a declining trend line and the structure of its parallel channel continue to act as resistance.
SMH found support at the 50% area of a parallel channel that dates back to April 2025. If that fails, the next support is around $525, followed by the bottom of the channel near $508. Until semiconductors improve, I remain less bullish on the broader risk trade.
What Changed
The biggest macro change is the move in yields. The United States 10 Year Treasury Yield reached 5.012% before pulling back. The 2023 high sits just above at 5.021%.
The daily Relative Strength Index is 74.33, which is above the 70 level normally associated with near-term overbought conditions. That tells me yields are stretched, but resistance still has to prove itself. Support is at 4.809%, and I could see yields moving around inside this range before the Federal Reserve gives the market its next direction.
Oil is adding another layer of pressure. West Texas Intermediate Crude Oil (WTI) reached $104.95 before pulling back. The larger inverse head and shoulders pattern remains intact, with a measured move target around $116.46 near the declining trend line.
Momentum is elevated, though, and price has reached an important previous pivot. That makes a pause or pullback reasonable before another move higher.
Natural Gas (NG) is bouncing as well. Last week’s move below near term support failed to confirm because price recovered and later closed back above that area. The next major test is the previous high around 307. A move through there could push Natural Gas toward 315, with the larger near-term destination around the declining trend line at $3.25.
Gold (XAU) is struggling as yields rise. Gold traded near $4,250 and fell below the lower boundary of a rising parallel channel dating back to April 2025.
The level needed to remain inside that channel was above $4,308. That area also overlaps with a Fibonacci retracement level. If it fails, the next support is $4,200, which also lines up with a previous July pivot high.
Silver (XAG) fell 1.96% to $63.20 and continues to struggle around $63.26. The bigger concern is the head and shoulders neckline.
The pattern has triggered before without confirmation. A daily candle extending clearly below the neckline would strengthen the bearish setup and could pull silver toward the mid $50 range. Longer term, another important level sits at $49.83, tied to a trend line extending back to the April 2011 high.
Technology is also splitting into two different stories.
Applied Materials Inc. (AMAT) broke below a rising trend line dating back to September 2025. Support is clustered around the $400 area, with a gap fill near $407, another gap near $392, and a previous pivot around $397. If selling continues into that zone, I would watch for a technical bounce back toward the broken trend line.
Bloom Energy Corporation (BE) remains in a broader breakout structure but is going through a technical retracement. Price ran into resistance where the 50% area of its parallel channel overlaps with the 0.618 Fibonacci retracement.
If selling continues, one potential support area develops where the rising trend line meets the 0.382 Fibonacci retracement. A deeper decline brings the 50% Fibonacci retracement into play. Those overlapping levels matter because the stronger setups tend to develop where several technical factors meet at the same price.
Cybersecurity is where the strength moved.
Palo Alto Networks Inc. (PANW) pushed back inside its rising parallel channel after previously falling beneath it. The next major resistance is the declining trend line around $374.18. A break above that level improves the chance of retesting previous highs and potentially reaching the 50% area of the channel. One day back inside the channel is not enough, so PANW still needs a stronger close to confirm the recovery.
CrowdStrike Holdings Inc. (CRWD) reached new all-time highs but ran directly into resistance. It has moved into the upper 50% of its parallel channel. A close above the current candle would strengthen the breakout and could turn that 50% area into support. The bigger obstacle is the longer-term rising trend line that has held back previous highs. If that breaks, the next target is near the top of the channel around $267 to $270.
Okta Inc. (OKTA) jumped 11.98% and is approaching several resistance levels at once. The 0.618 Fibonacci retracement sits at $198.55, a previous March pivot is near $199.08, and the major psychological level is $200. RSI is also around 74. With momentum stretched and several resistance levels stacked together, the probability of a pause or rejection increases as Okta approaches $200.
Why It Matters
The market is still holding up, but several pressure points are converging.
Treasury yields near 5% make life harder for growth stocks. Semiconductor weakness tells me investors are becoming more selective about risk. Elevated oil adds another inflation-related pressure, while gold and silver are both testing important technical structures.
At the same time, money is not simply leaving the market. Some of it is rotating. Cybersecurity is attracting capital even while other technology areas weaken.
That distinction matters. This is not just about whether stocks are up or down. It is about where money is leaving, where it is going, and whether the major support levels continue to hold.
Key Levels
| Asset | Current Area | Support | Resistance or Target | What Matters |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 Index (SPX) | Near trend line | 760.40, then 7.55 | Repeated support tests are weakening the level | |
| Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) | $709 | $700 gap fill | August lows remain intact | |
| VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) | 50% channel area | $525, then $508 | 50-day moving average and declining trend line | Semiconductor weakness keeps risk appetite softer |
| United States 10 Year Treasury Yield (US10Y) | 5.012% | 4.809% | 5.021% | RSI 74.33 and Federal Reserve decision ahead |
| Gold (XAU) | Near $4,250 | $4,200 | $4,308 | Needs to recover the rising channel |
| Silver (XAG) | $63.20 | Mid $50 range, then $49.83 | $63.26 | Head and shoulders needs confirmation |
| West Texas Intermediate Crude Oil (WTI) | $104.95 high | $116.46 | Inverse head and shoulders remains intact | |
| Natural Gas (NG) | Rebounding | Prior recovered support | 307, 315, then $3.25 | Needs to clear the previous high |
| Applied Materials Inc. (AMAT) | Near $400 zone | $407, $397, $392 | Broken trend line | Support cluster could produce a bounce |
| Bloom Energy Corporation (BE) | Retracing | 0.382 and 50% Fibonacci areas | 0.618 Fibonacci and 50% channel area | Best support develops where levels overlap |
| Palo Alto Networks Inc. (PANW) | Back inside channel | Channel structure | $374.18 | Needs confirmation above declining trend line |
| CrowdStrike Holdings Inc. (CRWD) | New all-time highs | 50% channel area | $267 to $270 | Needs to clear longer-term trend resistance |
| Okta Inc. (OKTA) | Up 11.98% | $198.55, $199.08, $200 | RSI near 74 raises rejection risk |
The two levels I am watching most closely are 5.021% on the 10 Year Treasury Yield and the near-term support on the S&P 500. If yields keep pushing higher while the S&P loses support, pressure on growth and technology likely becomes much harder to ignore.
Bull Case
For the broader market, the bull case starts with the S&P 500 continuing to hold its trend line and QQQ defending the $700 gap area if tested. SMH would improve the risk picture by reclaiming its 50-day moving average and getting through the declining trend line.
A pullback in yields from the 5.021% resistance area would also relieve some pressure.
Oil can remain bullish while pausing after its recent run, with the larger inverse head and shoulders target still at $116.46. Natural Gas strengthens if it clears 307 and works toward 315 and eventually $3.25.
Gold needs to recover above $4,308 and regain its rising channel. Silver needs to avoid confirming the head-and-shoulders breakdown.
PANW strengthens above $374.18, CRWD improves if it confirms above the current candle and clears its longer-term trend resistance, and Okta can continue higher if it works through the resistance cluster around $198.55 to $200.
Bear Case
The bearish case begins if the S&P 500 finally loses its repeatedly tested support and QQQ breaks through the $700 gap area.
SMH remains vulnerable below its 50-day moving average. A break through the current channel support puts $525 in play, followed by $508.
If the 10 Year Treasury Yield pushes through 5.021%, that would keep pressure on growth stocks and other risk assets.
Gold becomes more vulnerable if it cannot recover $4,308, with $4,200 as the next major support. Silver becomes more bearish if the head and shoulders pattern confirms, opening the door toward the mid $50 range and potentially the longer term $49.83 level.
AMAT remains exposed toward its $407, $397, and $392 support cluster. PANW still needs confirmation that its return inside the channel will hold. Okta is particularly vulnerable to a pause or rejection because RSI is around 74 while several resistance levels converge near $200.
What to Watch Next
The Federal Reserve decision Wednesday is the main macro catalyst.
Before then, watch whether the 10 Year Treasury Yield tests or breaks the 2023 high at 5.021%. That reaction matters because yields are already stretched with RSI at 74.33.
Watch the S&P 500 trend line closely because repeated tests are weakening it. QQQ has $700 as the next major support zone, while SMH needs to show that buyers can defend its parallel channel.
In commodities, watch whether gold can recover $4,308, whether silver confirms or rejects its head and shoulders setup, whether oil pauses below its larger $116.46 target, and whether Natural Gas can clear 307.
In technology, the key tests are PANW at $374.18, CRWD against its longer-term trend resistance, Okta around $198.55 to $200, and AMAT around the $400 support cluster.
Bottom Line
The market is still holding together, but rising Treasury yields, elevated oil, and weakness in semiconductors are making that support more fragile. Cybersecurity is showing that capital is still willing to take risk, but it is becoming much more selective about where that risk goes.
The next major decision point is the Federal Reserve, with the 10 Year Treasury Yield near 5% and the S&P 500 repeatedly testing support. Until those levels resolve, patience matters more than prediction: let support hold, let resistance break, and let price confirm the next move.
