Rising Treasury Yields Pressure S&P 500 as Broader Market Weakness Persists
Can the S&P 500 hold its strength as Treasury yields climb?
S&P 500 futures are slipping as Treasury yields climb again, reversing the support stocks received from lower yields earlier this morning. The tension now is between a resilient headline index and growing pressure from interest rates, a stronger dollar and weakness across the broader stock market.
In One Minute
Stocks are preparing to open slightly lower, with the S&P 500 Index (SPX) facing a decline of about 0.2% as the United States 10 Year Treasury Yield (TNX) reaches 5.311%. The index remains only 1% below its all time high, but the equal weight market is substantially weaker. I’m watching whether yields clear their major resistance, whether the index holds its bullish structure and whether Bitcoin confirms its approaching breakout.
The Setup
S&P 500 Index futures (ES) benefited from slightly lower yields earlier this morning, but that changed when the 10 year yield climbed from 5.27% to 5.3% in 30 minutes. It has since reached 5.311%, making new intraday highs as futures move lower. On the weekly chart, yields are testing resistance tied to the 2007 peak. A sustained move above that level puts yields in territory last seen in 2002.
Political unrest in France and tensions around the Middle East, the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea would normally encourage buying in United States Treasury securities. That buying has not yet pushed yields down, which keeps pressure on stocks. Meanwhile, the United States Dollar Index (DXY) has moved above 102.5 before easing slightly, reaching a 17 month high as European unrest supports the dollar.
The S&P 500 daily pattern remains bullish because price is still above its neutral zone. I remain bearish longer term, but the near term chart continues to show resilience rather than a confirmed breakdown. With the index only 1% below its all time high despite elevated yields and energy costs, I’m giving that technical strength its due.
What Changed
The Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF (RSP) bounced on Friday but is preparing to open flat to lower. I’m watching major technical support around $205, where the fund would be more than 8% below its August all time high. That is a much weaker picture than the standard S&P 500, and it tells me the headline index is masking considerable weakness underneath.
The iShares MSCI Brazil ETF (EWZ) is up 13% after Bolsonaro’s son defeated Lula, with investors responding to the result as a shift toward more capitalist policies. Its weekly chart broke out of a wedge extending back to the 2010 high, rallied, pulled back and is now advancing again. That is a constructive breakout sequence, but I would look for a pullback instead of chasing this jump.
Gold (XAUUSD) is holding a rising trend line built through repeated touches and rebounds. A confirmed break could send it below $4,000, and losing that area would bring roughly $3,500 into view. I remain strongly bullish longer term and would look to accumulate below $4,000 toward $3,500.
For the immediate setup, I want a daily close below the trend line, ideally followed by confirmation, before treating support as broken. A brief dip beneath it on a five minute candle could simply be a false break. The concern is the large down candle followed by smaller candles inside its range, which could become a bear flag if it continues into Wednesday or Thursday. That pattern would leave the support line with roughly even odds of holding.
Silver (XAGUSD) has a similar setup, with a decline followed by smaller candles inside the earlier range while longer term support holds. I’m respecting that support, but the consolidation could develop into a bearish continuation pattern. Wednesday or Thursday is the window to watch for either a recovery or a break of the key trend line.
Crude Oil (CL) is declining, and I remain bearish as price repeatedly tests its support trend line. Oil has averaged roughly $90 to $95 a barrel since almost the beginning of the year, even while trading above and below that range. Repeated tests can weaken support, and a break below $89 opens the way toward approximately $79 to $78.
The approaching midterm elections also support my downside view because lower oil prices would be politically advantageous. I do not expect a completed United States agreement with Iran, but negotiation reports or rumors could emerge before the elections. That remains speculative, so $89 is the direct trigger I’m watching, and support still deserves respect until it breaks.
Natural Gas (NG) reversed higher on Friday and recovered its key short term support. It is pausing today rather than following through with a strong advance. I remain bullish on the chart, although the recovery has been less forceful than the moves in other commodities this year.
Petróleo Brasileiro S.A., Petrobras (PBR) is up 8% as Brazilian stocks respond to the election result. Its parallel channel, tracked since 2025, also formed a long term bull flag after an earlier advance. The breakout produced a substantial rally, and today’s gap higher continues that strength.
NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA), with a market value of $5 trillion, and Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL), at $4 trillion, help explain the concentration supporting the headline S&P 500. Roughly 50% of the index’s weight sits in about 10 to 12 stocks. The equal weight fund gives each company the same contribution, making its weakness an important check on how broadly the rally is shared.
I’m increasingly constructive on beaten down Chinese equities because sentiment is deeply negative and an eventual economic recovery could produce a catch up move. Baidu, Inc. (BIDU) is near the lower boundary of a parallel channel, where major technical support supports gradual accumulation. It could still move lower, so I’m treating this as an accumulation setup rather than assuming the final low is in. Brazil’s rally illustrates how quickly expectations can change, but it does not establish when China will recover.
Alibaba Group Holding Limited (BABA) broke above a descending trend line, returned to test the breakout area and attracted buyers. It is coming back toward support, with an ascending trend line expected to meet the descending line around $100 or slightly below. A possible inverse head and shoulders pattern is forming, but it needs price to turn higher and clear the neckline connecting the intervening highs. Until that happens, the reversal remains preliminary.
Intel Corporation (INTC) is down about 4% to 5% as Tesla, Inc. (TSLA) considers Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSM) wafers for its Terafab project instead of Intel’s. The potential sourcing change is weighing on Intel, while the United States government’s investment adds political sensitivity. For an intraday rebound, I’m watching the $108.50 gap fill and nearby prior turning points, which create substantial support between $108.50 and $107.
Digital Assets and Crypto
Bitcoin (BTC) is approaching a breakout test, with resistance references at $87,200 and $87,300. Earlier price peaks have repeatedly capped advances around this area, so I want a daily close above it before calling the breakout confirmed. If buyers clear that barrier, the measured move points toward $97,000 to $98,000.
If Bitcoin turns lower instead, approximately $81,300 is the main support. Several earlier peaks align there, and price previously hugged that line before breaking higher, turning former resistance into support. If that support fails, roughly $75,000 becomes the next downside reference.
For now, Bitcoin is still inside a defined range, and the direction of the break determines the next move. Holding $81,300 preserves another attempt at resistance, while a confirmed close above the $87,200 and $87,300 references strengthens the bullish case. I’m waiting for that daily confirmation instead of treating an approach to resistance as a completed breakout.
Why It Matters
The central issue is that rising yields are pressuring futures while the S&P 500 remains technically resilient. That strength is concentrated, with the equal weight fund showing a much weaker market underneath. At the same time, gold and silver are defending support, oil is repeatedly testing its downside boundary and Bitcoin is approaching its upside trigger. Those charts give us specific conditions to follow instead of relying on the headlines alone.

Bull Case
The near term stock market case stays constructive while the S&P 500 holds above its neutral zone. Gold and silver can recover while their support lines hold, and natural gas retains its bullish setup after reclaiming short term support. Brazil’s breakout remains constructive, while Baidu offers channel support and Alibaba could strengthen its reversal case with a neckline break. Bitcoin’s upside case needs a confirmed daily close above resistance to activate the $97,000 to $98,000 target.
Bear Case
Continued strength in yields remains the main pressure on stocks, especially with the equal weight market already struggling. Gold’s possible bear flag threatens its trend line, with a confirmed failure opening the path below $4,000 and potentially toward $3,500, while silver faces a similar support test. Oil below $89 opens $79 to $78, and Bitcoin below approximately $81,300 risks roughly $75,000. Chinese equities could still decline before recovering, and Intel remains under pressure from the potential sourcing change.
What to Watch Next
The ISM Services release is scheduled for 10:00 AM, with 55 as the consensus estimate, followed by Wednesday’s Federal Reserve minutes ahead of the next meeting later this month. Watch yields around their 2007 resistance and whether the S&P 500 continues holding its neutral zone. By Wednesday or Thursday, gold and silver may clarify whether their consolidation leads to recovery or a breakdown. Oil’s $89 support and Bitcoin’s daily close around resistance are the other major confirmation points.
Bottom Line
The most important relationship is still rising Treasury yields against a resilient S&P 500. Broader stock weakness, fragile metals support and Bitcoin’s unresolved breakout keep price confirmation essential. Wait for the daily closes, respect the support levels and avoid chasing moves that have already stretched.
