Rising Treasury Yields Pressure Markets as Technology Holds Key Support
Can technology keep holding up as Treasury yields remain elevated?
Stocks finished mixed after the Federal Reserve, with the broader market selling off before a late technical recovery, while technology and semiconductors held up better than small caps. The bigger fight now is between elevated Treasury yields and resilient technology demand, with rising oil adding another inflation risk while precious metals and Bitcoin sit near important technical levels.
In One Minute
The SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) finished down 0.44%, but a late bounce from below $750 kept the session from getting uglier. The Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) finished up 0.3% after buyers stepped in at $700, while the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (IWM) broke beneath an important long-term trend line. The U.S. 10 Year Treasury Yield (US10Y) finished just above 5% after reaching 5.041%, putting the 5.021% resistance area directly in play. Oil remains an inflation risk with West Texas Intermediate Crude Oil (WTI) still pointing toward roughly $116, and Bitcoin (BTC) needs to keep closing above $75,584 to preserve its current consolidation.
The Setup
The Federal Reserve is still controlling the broader setup. Markets entered the year talking about rate cuts, but the conversation has shifted toward the possibility of another rate increase in December. There is also a small possibility of a larger move, although we would need more information from interest rate and employment data before treating that as a serious base case.
That puts even more attention on the U.S. 10 Year Treasury Yield. Before the Fed announcement, yields looked overbought and positioned for a possible pullback. Instead, expectations for another increase pushed yields sharply higher again.
US10Y finished just above 5%. Key resistance is 5.021%, and the intraday high reached 5.041%. If 5.021% is cleared convincingly, the next intermediate pivot is around 5.3%, while the longer-range technical level sits at 6.249%, the 0.382 Fibonacci retracement of the move from the 1981 peak near 15.82%. That does not mean yields are going straight there, but it tells us how important this resistance test has become.
The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) is also pushing higher, but it is running into an overhead rising trend line combined with a moving average pattern. That gives the dollar a two-factor resistance area. If it starts stalling there, gold and silver could finally get a little relief.
The Cboe Volatility Index (VIX) briefly pushed close to 19 before falling back to 17.72. VIX is trying to break above a declining trend line connecting the March 30 and July 29 pivot highs, but that breakout has not been confirmed. The late recovery in SPY, QQQ, and semiconductors helped keep volatility from closing at the highs.
What Changed
SPY finished down 0.44% and closed below the previous day's low, which increases the probability of additional weakness. At the same time, price pierced the psychological $750 level and bounced sharply late in the session. The nearby support zone around $755 has now been tested and reclaimed. The next question is whether SPY can move back above the previous close at $757.39.
QQQ behaved very differently. It finished up 0.3% after dropping exactly to $700, where the psychological round number and nearby gap fill attracted buyers. Technology is sensitive to higher rates because artificial intelligence infrastructure and data center development require enormous capital spending, but many of the largest companies inside QQQ also have deep enough pockets to absorb those higher financing costs better than smaller companies.
The VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) also held up. Price dropped into the 50% area of its parallel channel and bounced. QQQ and SMH both found technical support after the Fed announcement and helped pull the broader market off its lows. Investors are still willing to buy technology and semiconductors because spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure remains strong. The risk is that SMH starts consolidating beneath its declining trend line while sitting on support. If that happens, another leg lower toward the bottom of the parallel channel becomes possible.
IWM was much weaker. It broke beneath a long-term rising trend line that had influenced the chart since November 2024 and confirmed underneath it. The next major support is $273.68 along a long-term parallel structure. If selling continues directly into that area while IWM becomes increasingly oversold, that could become a technical bounce zone.
In precious metals, Gold (XAU) remains under pressure from higher rates and a stronger dollar. The key level is $4,297. A close below $4,297 increases the probability that gold stays beneath its parallel channel longer and moves toward the next support at $4,202. The last time gold broke beneath this structure, it took considerable time to recover back inside it.
Silver (XAG) has already broken beneath a rising trend line, and its head and shoulders pattern remains active. The pattern still needs stronger confirmation through a more decisive move away from the neckline and beneath the September 14 daily candle. If that happens, silver could move below the 50% area of its parallel channel and return toward the lower consolidation range from July.
WTI remains relatively unaffected by the Fed because geopolitical supply risk is still the dominant driver. Oil is consolidating near the upper part of a rising parallel channel, while disruption involving Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline adds another supply concern. The upper trend line sits around $116.40, while the inverse head and shoulders pattern points toward approximately $116.33. Oil has had opportunities to pull back but has continued consolidating near the highs instead.
That matters because higher oil can feed inflation through transportation, manufacturing, and consumer prices. Inflation in Europe is already above 3%, alongside concerns about fuel availability for airlines.
Natural Gas (NG) had a weaker session but has not broken its broader structure. It is still holding a strong V-shaped recovery after retesting support tied to the April 8 pivot. Resistance sits at $3.15, followed by a midterm target around $3.24 along a declining trend line. An inverse head and shoulders structure does not cleanly qualify because of the lower part of the formation, but $3.24 remains an important breakout area.
Lumentum Holdings Inc. (LITE) gained 9.59% despite weakness across most of the market. Price ran into a gap fill and closed slightly below it, but the broader setup remains constructive. The recent decline reached the bottom of a parallel channel, followed by a sharp recovery and sideways consolidation. The major breakout level is $970.86. Until that breaks and holds, the setup remains a bullish consolidation rather than a confirmed breakout.
ASE Technology Holding Co., Ltd. (ASX) also has a breakout and retracement setup, but I am more cautious here. Price broke above its trend line, confirmed, and retraced, but the bounce has been soft and sticky instead of reacting sharply. ASX is already relatively high on the chart, so there is less open space above. Roughly 4% to 5% could already have been captured from the move, but momentum has not confirmed a strong continuation.
Transportation remains under pressure from higher diesel costs. J.B. Hunt Transport Services, Inc. (JBHT) has broken down sharply, with an important support pocket between the 0.382 and 0.5 Fibonacci retracement areas and a rising trend line around $221.52. Daily RSI is around 31.03. If support forms, a technical bounce could eventually reach the 0.236 retracement area around $258.
Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc. (ODFL) is sitting around its 0.618 Fibonacci retracement at $174.15. A short-term bounce could reach the prior low pivot around $186.89, but price has dropped beneath the 200-day moving average after the 50-day moving average crossed above the 200-day moving average. I want to see price recover that 200 moving average quickly. If $174.15 fails, support runs through roughly $160 and then $152.98, where the 0.786 Fibonacci retracement could line up near the bottom of the parallel channel. The area around $150 is the stronger, more conservative support zone. Daily RSI is deeply oversold at 23.2, while the weekly RSI has not reached the same condition.
Digital Assets and Crypto
Bitcoin is still technically holding together, but this is an important decision area.
The Clarity Act received 50 votes in favor and 49 against, but it needed 60 votes to advance. The legislation would have provided greater regulatory certainty and made institutional participation easier, so the failure to advance removes a potential near-term catalyst. At the same time, expectations for passage before year-end were already low.
Technically, Bitcoin has been moving lower inside a declining parallel channel and briefly breached the 50% area of that structure. The most important level is the August 23 candle that closed at $75,584.
Bitcoin has not produced a daily close beneath $75,584. As long as that remains true, the broader bullish consolidation stays intact.
If Bitcoin closes below $75,584, the probability of another move lower increases and the next support becomes $72,481. If Bitcoin keeps holding above $75,584, it can still rebound and remain inside its broader consolidation range.
Circle Internet Group, Inc. (CRCL) has a different setup. Circle broke out, confirmed the move, retraced back toward the trend line, and is now sitting in a potential bounce area.
Circle issues USD Coin (USDC), and higher interest rates can support interest-related revenue tied to reserves. The delayed Clarity Act also leaves the current stablecoin revenue environment in place for now rather than introducing restrictions that could have reduced that revenue opportunity.
Technically, the first upside area is around $89, followed by the psychological $100 level. If CRCL continues moving sideways instead of breaking down, a cup and handle structure could also begin developing.
Why It Matters
The market is not moving as one unit.
Higher Treasury yields are clearly hurting smaller companies and rate-sensitive areas, but QQQ and SMH are still attracting buyers at technical support. That tells me investors have not abandoned technology or artificial intelligence.
At the same time, oil is creating another problem. If WTI keeps moving toward the $116 area, inflation pressure can remain elevated even while the Fed keeps rates high. That combination is difficult for transportation companies such as JBHT and ODFL, and it can also keep pressure on gold and silver if yields and the dollar remain strong.
Bitcoin is dealing with a similar push and pull. Regulatory progress has been delayed, but the chart itself has not broken as long as $75,584 continues to hold.
Key Levels
| Asset | Support | Resistance or Target | What Matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) | $755, then psychological $750 | $757.39 | Reclaiming the prior close strengthens the bounce |
| Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) | $700 | Gap area already reclaimed | Buyers defended psychological support |
| iShares Russell 2000 ETF (IWM) | $273.68 | Broken long-term trend line | Confirmed trend line break keeps pressure elevated |

| Cboe Volatility Index (VIX) | 17.72 | Near 19, then a declining trend line | Breakout still needs confirmation |
| Gold (XAU) | $4,202 | $4,297 | A close below $4,297 strengthens the breakdown |
| West Texas Intermediate Crude Oil (WTI) | Consolidation range | $116.33 to $116.40 | Higher oil increases inflation risk |
| Natural Gas (NG) | Prior April 8 support structure | $3.15, then $3.24 | $3.24 is the more important breakout area |
| Bitcoin (BTC) | $75,584, then $72,481 | Consolidation range | Daily close below $75,584 weakens structure |
| Lumentum Holdings Inc. (LITE) | Parallel channel support | $970.86 | Break and hold needed for confirmation |
| J.B. Hunt Transport Services, Inc. (JBHT) | $221.52 | About $258 | RSI near 31.03 as price searches for support |
| Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc. (ODFL) | $174.15, $160, $152.98 | $186.89 | Daily RSI 23.2, price needs to reclaim 200 moving average |
| Circle Internet Group, Inc. (CRCL) | Breakout retracement area | $89, then $100 | Holding the retracement keeps the breakout alive |
The two levels I am watching most closely across the broader market are 5.021% on the 10 Year Treasury Yield and $75,584 on Bitcoin. For equities, the strength around $700 in QQQ versus the breakdown in IWM tells us exactly where investors are still willing to take risk.
Bull Case
For stocks, the better outcome starts with Treasury yields failing to break cleanly through 5.021%. If yields cool and the dollar stalls at resistance, SPY has a chance to build on its late recovery, while QQQ and SMH can continue holding the technical support they defended after the Fed.
SPY reclaiming $757.39 would strengthen the near-term recovery. QQQ continuing to hold $700 would keep technology leadership intact. SMH holding the 50% area of its parallel channel would also reduce the risk of another semiconductor leg lower.
Gold and silver would benefit if the dollar fades from resistance. Gold holding above $4,297 would reduce the probability of a deeper move toward $4,202.
Natural gas holding its V-shaped recovery keeps $3.15 and $3.24 in play. LITE clearing $970.86 would confirm its breakout attempt, while ASX could continue higher if its retracement finally produces stronger momentum.
JBHT holding around $221.52 could open a technical bounce toward $258. ODFL holding $174.15 and recovering the 200 moving average would improve its setup.
Bitcoin holding $75,584 keeps the consolidation intact, and CRCL holding its breakout retracement keeps $89 and $100 in play.
Bear Case
The main risk is Treasury yields breaking through 5.021% and remaining elevated. That would keep pressure on smaller companies, rate-sensitive sectors, precious metals, and eventually broader equity valuations.
SPY has already closed below the previous day's low. If the late recovery fails and $755 gives way again, the bounce loses credibility.
IWM has already confirmed beneath its long-term trend line. Continued weakness puts $273.68 directly in focus.
SMH becomes more vulnerable if it consolidates beneath its declining trend line while sitting on support, because that could lead to another move toward the bottom of its parallel channel.
Gold closing beneath $4,297 increases the probability of $4,202. Silver confirming farther beneath its neckline raises the probability of a move below the 50% channel area and back toward the July consolidation range.
Oil is a different kind of bearish risk. A move toward $116.33 to $116.40 would strengthen inflation pressure and keep transportation stocks under stress.
For JBHT, a failure around $221.52 would weaken the bounce setup. For ODFL, losing $174.15 brings $160 and $152.98 into play.
Bitcoin closing below $75,584 would shift attention immediately toward $72,481. CRCL losing its breakout retracement would weaken the setup before $89 or $100 can come back into play.
What to Watch Next
The first thing I want to see is how the market handles the U.S. 10 Year Treasury Yield around 5.021%. That level is now tied directly to the outlook for technology, small caps, metals, and overall market volatility.
Next, watch whether SPY can reclaim $757.39 and whether QQQ continues defending $700.
VIX also needs attention. A confirmed breakout above its declining trend line would increase the risk of another selling wave.
In commodities, gold needs to hold $4,297, while oil remains focused on the $116.33 to $116.40 area. Natural gas has $3.15 and $3.24 overhead.
For crypto, Bitcoin's $75,584 daily closing level is the line I would watch most closely. CRCL needs its breakout retracement to hold if the move toward $89 and possibly $100 is going to develop.
Bottom Line
The most important relationship right now is still Treasury yields versus risk assets. Technology and semiconductors are holding up, small caps are showing more damage, oil remains an inflation threat, precious metals are under pressure, and Bitcoin is sitting directly above a key support level.
There are good setups on both sides, but several markets are already sitting at support or resistance. This is not the place to chase price. Let the levels confirm the next move first.
