Rising Oil Pushes Treasury Yields Higher as Stocks Test Support
Can Stocks Hold Support as Rising Oil Pushes Yields Higher?
S&P 500 futures are lower this morning as rising oil prices push inflation concerns and Treasury yields back toward major resistance. The bigger issue is the chain reaction among oil, yields, the Federal Reserve, and whether the S&P 500 can hold its key technical support.
In One Minute
E Mini S&P 500 Futures (/ES) were down about one third of 1%, while West Texas Intermediate Crude Oil (USOIL) was trading at $95.77 after breaking through $93.25 resistance. The CBOE 10 Year Treasury Note Yield Index (TNX) reached about 4.816% and is testing 4.81%. If yields break 4.81%, 5% comes into focus. For stocks, the S&P 500 Index (SPX) remains technically bullish above 7570.
The Setup
Oil is controlling the macro setup. Geopolitical escalation involving Iran, U.S. bases, and tankers is helping keep crude elevated, and higher energy prices feed into inflation through production and transportation costs.
That matters because higher oil is pushing yields higher just as the Federal Reserve approaches its next decision. As long as SPX stays above 7570, I’m still favoring the bullish side. A break below that level moves the market into a neutral zone.
What Changed
Crude has pushed through short-term resistance at $93.25 and is now aiming at $97, where a chart gap and previous pivot high come together. The 10-year yield briefly pushed above 4.81% to about 4.816%, then backed off to 4.804%, so resistance is still holding for now.
The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) is weakening toward support at 9850, helping gold and silver bounce. Gold is up about 1.25%, but a possible head-and-shoulders pattern remains in play. If its neckline breaks, the measured move points toward 3950. Silver has a similar setup, with a neckline break pointing toward roughly $55 to $56 per ounce.
Why It Matters
The connection is simple: higher oil can lift inflation, higher inflation can push yields higher, and higher yields can pressure stocks and increase pressure on the Federal Reserve.
Copper remains near recent highs inside an ascending channel, but slower artificial intelligence capital spending, weaker data center construction, or slower economic activity could put that structure at risk. Alphabet Inc. Class A (GOOGL) is testing a long-term rising trend line that has been hit seven times, while Apple Inc. (AAPL) is testing its own rising trend line around $316.
Key Levels
| Asset | Current Area | Key Level | What Matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| SPX | Bullish zone | 7570 support | Hold it to preserve the bullish structure |
| TNX | 4.804% | 4.81% resistance, then 5% | A breakout increases stock pressure |
| USOIL | $95.77 | $97 resistance | A break keeps the oil move going |
| DXY | Near support | 9850 | A break matters for the dollar and metals |
| AAPL | Near trend line | Around $316 | The closing price matters |
| GOOGL | Testing rising trend line | About $272 downside target if support breaks | Watch the daily close |
Bull Case
If SPX holds 7570, the bullish structure remains intact. A pullback in oil from near $97 toward $90, a decline in yields from 4.8% toward 4.7%, or no Federal Reserve rate increase would reduce pressure on stocks.
Bear Case
The bearish scenario starts with oil breaking above $97 and potentially moving above $100 while the 10-year yield clears 4.81% and pushes toward 5%. A break below 7570 would move SPX into neutral territory.
What to Watch Next
First, watch whether oil can clear $97. Right behind that is 4.81% on the 10-year yield, then 7570 on SPX. Apple’s close around $316 and Alphabet’s close around its long-term support are the key stock confirmations.
The Federal Reserve meeting is scheduled for September 15 and 16, with the policy announcement on September 16. (Federal Reserve)
Bottom Line
Oil is still the center of this market. If crude keeps rising and pushes yields through 4.81%, stocks face more pressure, but as long as SPX holds 7570, the technical structure remains bullish. For now, I’m respecting those levels and waiting for price to confirm the next move.
