Morning Briefing: Oil Above $100 Pushes Yields Toward 5% as Stocks Test Support
Can Stocks Hold Support as Oil Pushes Yields Toward 5%?
S&P 500 futures are down roughly 0.6% as West Texas Intermediate Crude Oil pushes above $100 and the U.S. 10 Year Treasury yield climbs toward 5%. The market now comes down to one conflict: whether stocks can hold major support while rising oil, higher yields, and increased Federal Reserve rate expectations tighten financial conditions.
In One Minute
West Texas Intermediate Crude Oil (WTI) jumped from roughly $97 to almost $101 in about an hour and has gained 26% since August 26. The U.S. 10 Year Treasury Yield (US10Y) reached about 4.92%, putting 5% directly in play. The S&P 500 Index (SPX) remains bullish as long as 7,570 to 7,575 holds, making that the most important potential buying area today. Meanwhile, the CME FedWatch Tool shows a 70% probability of a rate increase next week, with CPI tomorrow at 8:30 AM ET as the next major catalyst.
The Setup
Oil is controlling the macro picture right now. Higher energy prices are feeding inflation concerns, Treasury yields are rising in response, and stocks are pulling back.
Producer Price Index data was broadly in line with expectations. Headline PPI came in at 0.4%, while core PPI was 0.2% versus 0.3% expected. But that softer core number has been overshadowed by moves in oil and yields.
The S&P 500 Index is still only about 2.8% below its all-time high, even with oil near $100 and the 10-year yield around 4.92%. That tells me the technical structure still matters more than the headlines.
What Changed
WTI surged above $100, with the next major resistance around $104. At the same time, the 10-year yield broke higher and reached roughly 4.92%, leaving 5% as the next major test.
The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) is also strengthening, which is adding pressure to Gold Spot U.S. Dollar (XAUUSD) and Silver Spot U.S. Dollar (XAGUSD). Bitcoin U.S. Dollar (BTCUSD) is weakening as well and is now testing the lower side of its recent structure.
Why It Matters
The relationship is straightforward: higher oil can keep inflation elevated, higher inflation can push Treasury yields higher, and higher yields can pressure stocks while increasing the chance of another Federal Reserve rate increase.
That is why the S&P support test matters so much. If stocks can absorb oil above $100 and yields near 5% without breaking support, the bullish structure survives.
Digital Assets and Crypto
Bitcoin U.S. Dollar (BTCUSD) is selling off and may be starting a larger breakdown. Bitcoin had been holding inside an ascending parallel channel, but price is now breaking below the lower boundary of that structure.
The first support level to watch is $76,200, followed by $75,500. That $75,500 level is especially important because a break below it would create a new recent low and could bring much heavier selling into Bitcoin. For now, this is not a clean buy setup. I want to see whether buyers can defend those support levels before assuming the larger bullish structure will resume.
Zcash U.S. Dollar (ZECUSD) has a very different setup. Zcash recently reached the upper boundary of its long-term ascending parallel channel after gaining roughly 170% from its previous low. That channel resistance produced a sharp rejection, and Zcash has already fallen roughly 10% from its high.
Even after that decline, the chart remains bearish. The rejection came directly from major resistance after an extremely extended move, so the current pullback by itself is not a reason to buy. The source view is that Zcash remains vulnerable to additional downside.
Key Levels
| Asset | Current Area | Support | Resistance | What Matters |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 Index (SPX) | Near support | 7,570 to 7,575 | Holding keeps the bullish bias intact | |
| U.S. 10 Year Treasury Yield (US10Y) | About 4.92% | 5% | Break above 5% increases market pressure | |
| WTI Crude Oil (WTI) | Above $100 | $104 | Further gains increase inflation pressure | |
| Gold (XAUUSD) | Near neckline | $4,300, then $4,160 | Break opens $4,000 to $3,900 | |
| Silver (XAGUSD) | Near neckline | $63.70 | Break opens $59.75, then $55 | |
| Bitcoin (BTCUSD) | Pulling back | $76,200, then $75,500 | $75,500 failure could accelerate selling |
Bull Case
The bullish case starts with the S&P holding 7,570 to 7,575. The recent decline can still be viewed as a bull flag, and holding that area creates a potential buy opportunity in the index and selected high-quality names.
Alphabet Inc. Class A (GOOGL) is one swing candidate if that support holds. American Eagle Outfitters Inc. (AEO) also has a potential buying zone between $13.60 and $13.20, while Macy's Inc. (M) has an interesting support area around $20.
Bear Case
A break below S&P support weakens the bullish setup. A 10-year yield move through 5% would add more pressure.
Gold below $4,300, silver below $63.70, and Bitcoin below $75,500 would each confirm additional technical weakness. Zcash U.S. Dollar (ZECUSD) also remains bearish after rejecting the top of its ascending channel following roughly a 170% advance.
What to Watch Next
The biggest catalyst is CPI tomorrow at 8:30 AM ET. Also watch the 10-year yield at 5%, WTI near $104, and whether the S&P can defend 7,570 to 7,575.
Oracle Corporation (ORCL) reports after the close. Around $180 is the upside level, while $140 is the downside level if earnings produce a sharp move.
Bottom Line
Oil above $100 and Treasury yields approaching 5% are now driving the market. As long as the S&P 500 holds 7,570 to 7,575, I still favor the bullish side and selective buying opportunities, but a confirmed break changes the setup quickly.
