Morning Briefing: Lower Oil and Yields Lift Stocks Ahead of the Fed Decision
Can lower oil and yields keep stocks rising after the Fed decision?
Stocks are moving higher this morning as oil eases and the United States 10 Year Treasury Yield pulls back, giving S&P 500 futures some relief ahead of the Federal Reserve decision. The bigger issue now is whether lower oil and yields can hold after the Fed speaks, because that relationship is driving stocks, precious metals, technology, and even parts of the crypto market.
In One Minute
The Federal Reserve decision at 2:00 PM ET is the main event, with markets pricing a 92.7% probability of a 25 basis point rate increase. The hike itself is largely priced in, so what matters more is what the Fed says about future hikes. West Texas Intermediate Crude Oil (WTI) has pulled back toward $104, the 10 Year Treasury Yield is backing away from its double-top area, and S&P 500 futures are responding higher. For the S&P 500 Index (SPX), 7,570 to 7,575 remains the line that keeps the near-term bullish structure intact.
The Setup
The market is trading around one relationship right now: oil, Treasury yields, and Federal Reserve policy.
When oil pushes higher, inflation concerns increase and Treasury yields tend to feel that pressure. Higher yields then make financial conditions tighter for stocks, particularly highly valued technology and artificial intelligence companies that are sensitive to borrowing costs.
Today that relationship is moving in the opposite direction. Oil is easing, the 10 Year Treasury Yield is pulling back from its recent double-top area, and stock futures are moving higher.
A firm but data-dependent Fed could actually help longer-maturity yields move lower if investors become more confident that inflation remains the priority. That is why the message after the rate decision may matter more than the 25 basis point hike itself.
The S&P 500 is still holding its major 7,570 to 7,575 support area. That zone was previously major resistance before the breakout, and price has now tested it twice as support. As long as the index closes above 7,570, I remain bullish in the near term. A close below 7,570 moves the setup toward neutral.
There is also a descending parallel structure following the previous strong rally. A sharp move higher followed by this type of sideways to downward consolidation can form a bull flag, so the structure remains constructive as long as major support holds.
The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) is inching higher but remains in a back-and-forth trading range. If the dollar continues higher, resistance comes in just above 100 along the ascending trend line.
What Changed
West Texas Intermediate Crude Oil is trading around $104.12 per barrel and later moved just below $104. Additional Saudi Arabian supply moving through Oman, combined with a build in United States inventories, has taken some immediate pressure off oil.
Technically, oil is also running into resistance. The major trend line begins at the December 2025 high and connects several later high pivots. Oil eventually gapped above it during the Middle East conflict and ran toward $120, then came back down into that same trend line.
After bouncing from that area and eventually breaking below it, oil has now rallied back into the trend line from underneath. That turns the old support into resistance, making this $104 area especially important. Geopolitical supply risk remains in the background, particularly around Saudi exports and the Strait of Hormuz, so one pullback does not erase the larger risk.
Gold (XAUUSD) is trying to recover after its head and shoulders pattern triggered to the downside. If gold closes back above the broken neckline, that bearish pattern is canceled. Lower Treasury yields are helping the rebound, and if the recovery holds, the near-term upside area remains around $4,800. If the bearish setup remains active, the downside target is around $3,900.
Silver (XAGUSD) is in a similar position. Its head and shoulders pattern broke lower, but silver is now pushing back above the breakdown area. Again, the 10 Year Treasury Yield is the key driver. If yields continue falling, gold and silver have a better foundation for recovery.
Henry Hub Natural Gas (NG) continues moving higher. The level to watch is $3. A breakthrough of that area could open approximately another 10% upside before natural gas reaches its next major technical resistance.
In technology, Meta Platforms Inc. (META) has closed above its descending trend line and is now trying to confirm the breakout. If it confirms, the first upside target is $690 to $700, followed by potential upside toward $750, where an unfilled gap remains.
The stock has already moved vertically, so I do not want to chase it here. If the breakout fails, it could become a short setup. If it confirms, I would rather let it run and wait for the next higher probability swing level.
Intel Corporation (INTC) is higher on the possibility of an arrangement with SK hynix Inc. (000660) involving an Intel facility for semiconductor production in the United States. That is positive for Intel and potentially supportive for semiconductors in the near term, although additional chip production could eventually increase supply and pressure margins.
Technically, Intel remains range-bound. Resistance is clearly defined at $106.70, while an ascending trend line connecting the lows forms the lower boundary. Until one of those levels breaks, Intel is still trading inside the range.
J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. (JBHT) is under pressure after warning that earnings would miss expectations by close to 10%, with higher fuel costs being the main problem. Diesel above $6 per gallon is hitting transportation margins hard. The trucks are still moving, and goods are still being delivered, but fuel is consuming significantly more cash.
The important support area is $235 down to approximately $230. That zone combines previous pivot highs that later became support with a gap fill. If oil eventually retreats and fuel costs ease, this earnings pressure could prove temporary rather than structural, making that support zone especially important.
Digital Assets and Crypto
Bitcoin (BTCUSD) is sitting directly on one of its most important near-term support zones at $76,000 to $75,000.
Bitcoin pierced that area yesterday and again today, but it is still trying to hold it. That matters because trading through support intraday is not the same thing as confirming a breakdown with a daily close below it.
As long as Bitcoin continues closing above $75,000, the bullish technical pattern remains alive. But bullish patterns can fail, and the invalidation level is clear. A daily close below $75,000 would materially weaken the structure and increase the risk of a move toward $67,000 to $66,000, where previous pivot highs create the next major support zone.
The latest weakness came after the U.S. Senate failed to advance the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act in its procedural vote. A procedural route for reconsideration remains available, but the timing of another attempt is uncertain. (Reuters)
For Bitcoin itself, I do not view the failed vote as necessarily changing the longer term digital asset argument. The larger near-term problem is sentiment across the crypto sector. Delayed regulatory clarity reduces optimism, and weaker sentiment can reduce buying interest.
For now, the chart is giving us the cleanest answer. $76,000 to $75,000 is what the bulls need to defend. Below that, on a daily closing basis, $67,000 to $66,000 becomes the next major area to watch.
Why It Matters
This entire market is connected through interest rates.
If oil keeps cooling, inflation pressure eases at the margin and the 10 Year Treasury Yield has more room to pull back. Lower yields would support the S&P 500, help gold and silver recover, and reduce some of the financing pressure hanging over technology and artificial intelligence stocks.
J.B. Hunt is showing the other side of that relationship. High energy prices are no longer just a macro discussion when diesel above $6 begins directly affecting corporate earnings.
Bitcoin has its own regulatory catalyst, but it is also trading in the same environment of rates, liquidity, and risk appetite. That is why today's Federal Reserve decision reaches far beyond the bond market.
Key Levels
| Asset | Current Area | Support | Resistance or Target | What Matters |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 Index (SPX) | Above major pivot zone | 7,570 to 7,575 | Descending parallel structure | Close above 7,570 keeps near term bullish structure intact |
| U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) | Range bound | Just above 100 | Ascending trend line remains resistance | |
| WTI Crude Oil | Around $104.12, later below $104 | Major trend line resistance | Lower oil helps yields and stocks | |
| Gold | Recovering | Broken neckline area | $4,800 upside, $3,900 downside | Close back above neckline cancels bearish pattern |
| Silver | Reclaiming breakdown area | Head and shoulders breakdown area | Needs to hold back above the broken pattern | |
| Natural Gas | Approaching $3 | $3, then approximately 10% additional upside | Break above $3 opens more upside | |
| Meta Platforms | Above descending trend line | Breakout area | $690 to $700, then $750 gap | Breakout still needs confirmation |
| Intel | Range bound | Ascending trend line | $106.70 | Wait for the range to break |
| J.B. Hunt | Pulling back | $235 to $230 | Support combines former pivots and gap fill | |
| Bitcoin | Testing support | $76,000 to $75,000, then $67,000 to $66,000 | Bullish pattern remains active above support | Daily close below $75,000 confirms meaningful weakness |
The two levels that matter most for the broader risk picture are 7,570 on the S&P 500 and the 10 Year Treasury Yield's reaction after the Fed. For crypto, $75,000 on Bitcoin is equally clean because a daily close below it changes the technical setup.
Bull Case
The bullish case starts with oil continuing to cool and the 10 Year Treasury Yield extending its pullback. If that happens while the Fed remains firm but data-dependent, the S&P 500 has a better chance of holding 7,570 to 7,575 and preserving its bull flag structure.
Gold and silver benefit if yields continue falling. Gold reclaiming its neckline would cancel the bearish head-and-shoulders setup and reopen the path toward $4,800.
Natural gas breaking $3 opens approximately another 10% upside before the next technical resistance.
Meta confirming its breakout keeps $690 to $700 in play, followed by the unfilled gap near $750.
Intel needs a clean break from its range, with $106.70 remaining the major upside barrier.
J.B. Hunt holding $235 to $230 becomes more constructive if oil and diesel costs eventually ease.
Bitcoin holding $76,000 to $75,000 keeps its bullish pattern alive.
Bear Case
The bearish case begins if oil reverses higher again and Treasury yields resume climbing after the Fed. That would bring renewed pressure on stocks, precious metals, and interest rate-sensitive technology names.
A daily S&P 500 close below 7,570 weakens the bullish structure and moves the index toward a neutral setup.
Gold failing to reclaim the broken neckline leaves the head and shoulders pattern active, with $3,900 remaining the downside target. Silver faces the same problem if its recovery above the breakdown area fails.
Meta becomes vulnerable if its trend line breakout fails rather than confirms.
J.B. Hunt becomes more exposed if fuel prices remain elevated and the $235 to $230 support zone cannot attract buyers.
For Bitcoin, a daily close below $75,000 is the clearest bearish trigger. That would invalidate the current bullish structure and open the risk of a move toward $67,000 to $66,000.
What to Watch Next
Everything starts with the Federal Reserve at 2:00 PM ET. The 92.7% probability of a 25 basis point hike means the market is prepared for the rate increase, so I will be watching the language around future hikes and then the reaction in the 10 Year Treasury Yield.
After that, watch whether oil can stay below the resistance area around $104, whether the S&P 500 continues holding 7,570 to 7,575, and whether gold and silver can complete their reversals back above their broken patterns.
For individual stocks, Meta needs breakout confirmation, Intel needs a break from its range, and J.B. Hunt needs to defend $235 to $230.
In crypto, the reaction around $76,000 to $75,000 remains the entire near-term Bitcoin setup.

Bottom Line
The market is getting relief from exactly what it needed this morning: lower oil and a pullback in Treasury yields. If that continues after the Fed, the S&P 500 can defend 7,570 to 7,575, precious metals have room to recover, and pressure on rate-sensitive stocks can ease, while Bitcoin still has to defend $75,000 on a daily closing basis.
There are several good setups here, but most are sitting directly at decision points. Let the Fed speak, let the levels confirm, and do not chase price before the market shows its hand.
