Falling Yields and Oil Push the S&P 500 Toward Record Highs
Can falling yields and oil carry the S&P 500 to new highs?
Stocks are rising as Treasury yields, the dollar, and oil prices pull back, putting the S&P 500 within reach of a new record high. The opportunity is a continued advance toward 8,000, but several individual stocks are approaching resistance while precious metals and Bitcoin still have important levels to defend.
In One Minute
E-mini S&P 500 Futures (ES) are up just under 0.5%, after the S&P 500 Index (SPX) closed about 0.5% below its record high yesterday. Lower yields and falling oil are helping that advance, while the Nasdaq Composite Index (IXIC) has already been reaching new highs over the past week. I remain bullish on the S&P 500 while it holds above 7,575, with 8,000, possibly slightly higher, in view before the next significant correction. The immediate question is whether oil confirms its breakdown and yields continue retreating from resistance.
The Setup
The United States 10 Year Treasury Yield (US10Y) is struggling around 5.28% to 5.3%, a major resistance area tied to the 2007 high before the Great Recession. Going further back, yields last traded above that historical turning point in 2002. I favor a pullback toward 5%, potentially slightly below, as expensive oil and elevated borrowing costs weigh on the economy. Strong gross domestic product numbers do not eliminate that concern because artificial intelligence investment may be masking weakness elsewhere.
With federal debt around $40 trillion, a 5.3% Treasury yield already creates pressure. Promises of fiscal discipline need action behind them, and a rise toward 7% to 10% could force spending restraint through market pressure. We saw that kind of forced austerity in European countries such as Greece and Italy around 2011. The United States Dollar (USD) is also pulling back after a strong advance, and both the dollar and yields look stretched enough to make a retreat plausible.
What Changed
The S&P 500 is catching up with the Nasdaq as lower yields improve the immediate backdrop. The 10-minute futures chart shows a quiet overnight session, followed by a gradual climb as yields declined early in the morning. A brief rebound in yields produced a small dip in futures, showing how sensitive stocks remain to borrowing costs. Holding above 7,575 keeps the bullish structure intact, with a break through the previous high opening the path toward 8,000 or slightly higher.
West Texas Intermediate Crude Oil (USOIL) is breaking beneath horizontal support and an ascending trend line that meet in the same area. Buyers defended the horizontal level on September 2, September 4, September 22, September 23, September 29, September 30, October 1, October 2, and October 5. Losing both support lines together strengthens the downside setup, with around $78 per barrel as the target. A descending line that previously acted as resistance could now offer support near that target, alongside another ascending line that previously capped prices.
I still need oil to remain below the broken support because an early session breakdown can reverse before the close. If the break holds, $78 becomes the favored objective by early November, heading into the midterm elections. The administration is also trying to lower fuel costs, including a proposal allowing trucks to use a lower grade of diesel that produces more pollution. Those measures may be limited compared with developments involving Iran, but falling oil is providing meaningful near-term support for stocks.
Gold (XAUUSD) is getting a modest lift from the weaker dollar and lower yields while testing an ascending support line that begins at the May 2025 low and connects several later lows. The important area is around $4,100, which gold briefly lost overnight before recovering above it during the session. A daily close below that support, followed by confirmation, would put $3,950 and potentially $3,500 in play. I remain bullish over the longer term because of debt concerns and broader global conditions, but the immediate setup still depends on defending support.
Silver (XAGUSD) is moving sideways above its longer-term ascending support line, although a possible bear flag is developing. That is a pause after a decline that can lead to another move lower, with around $59.50 as the critical break point. A daily close below $59.50 would open the way toward $55, potentially $50 or briefly below it; while support holds, buyers retain the advantage. Silver’s earlier rise to $120 per ounce is a reminder that shortage and supply restriction narratives do not prevent a pullback when price reaches resistance.
Natural Gas (NG) continues to rally, and I remain bullish with a retest of resistance, potentially followed by a breakout, as the objective. The key development was a brief daily close below support, followed by a much larger bullish reversal candle that reclaimed the level and closed above the previous bearish candle’s high. That showed buyers taking control after sellers had started gaining momentum. Two more rising candles followed, extending the advance over the past three days.
NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA) reached a record high yesterday and is moving higher again today within a wedge defined by clear support and resistance lines. The upper boundary has repeatedly preceded substantial pullbacks, making $255 to $256 the area where I would consider a swing short. I am waiting for price to reach that zone before acting. No level works every time, but the repeated reactions give me a reason to respect resistance despite enthusiasm around artificial intelligence.
Baidu, Inc. (BIDU) and Alibaba Group Holding Limited (BABA) offer potential recovery trades from depressed prices. Chinese equities near 52-week lows can become interesting when low valuations meet established support, even with reduced earnings expectations amid recessionary conditions in China. Baidu trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of about 8, despite those reduced expectations. Its descending parallel channel meets a major support structure, and price reached that intersection Friday, bounced yesterday, and is rising again today.
I expect further upside in Baidu and Alibaba over the coming days. Alibaba’s role in China invites comparisons with Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN), but their businesses and markets differ, so I am not assuming equivalent valuations. The opportunity rests on comparatively low valuations and favorable technical setups. Baidu’s reaction from the intersection of channel support and established support gives that recovery argument a concrete starting point.
Bank of America Corporation (BAC) fell from $64 to $53 in roughly two to three weeks, a decline of relatively uncommon size over the past several years. That drop reached a major technical support line, creating the rebound opportunity I am watching. I remain long; the stock is higher today, and my initial objective is $56. A stronger bounce could reach $57 to $58, provided buyers turn this support test into a sustained recovery.
Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) closed around $148 last Thursday, advanced to $159 on Monday, and reached $172 yesterday. It is trading around unchanged today after reaching a previous price high that now presents immediate resistance. If the rally continues, the upper boundary of a parallel channel offers another resistance area around $187, which also coincides with a gap fill. I am watching both barriers because a strong company can still face a short-term pullback after a sharp advance.
Digital Assets and Crypto
Bitcoin (BTCUSD) is hovering beneath resistance at $87,200 to $87,300, consolidating near the top of its recent advance. A daily close above that range would strengthen the bullish case and put $97,000 to $98,000 in view. That target reflects the projected size of the pattern and also meets resistance. The pattern currently looks like bullish consolidation, giving the upside scenario a slight advantage, but the breakout still needs confirmation.
The support I need buyers to defend is $81,300. If Bitcoin cannot clear resistance and returns to that level, a daily close beneath it would weaken the structure and increase the risk of a larger decline. Claims in 2021 and 2025 that the four-year cycle would behave differently reinforce why I prefer price confirmation over a persuasive narrative. For now, I respect $87,200 to $87,300 as resistance and $81,300 as the dividing line for the downside.
Why It Matters
Lower yields, a softer dollar, and falling oil are working together to support stocks, while lower yields and the weaker dollar are also helping gold. That improvement does not mean every asset offers the same trade: NVIDIA and SpaceX are approaching resistance, while Baidu and Bank of America are responding to support. Gold and silver still need to defend their trend lines, and natural gas has already delivered a strong bullish reversal. Bitcoin has its own decision point, where a daily close through resistance matters more than anticipation.

Bull Case
For stocks, the constructive scenario is continued relief from yields and oil while the S&P 500 holds above 7,575 and clears its previous high. Gold and silver keep their bullish footing by defending their trend lines, while natural gas builds on its reversal and challenges resistance. Baidu and Alibaba continue recovering, and Bank of America turns support into a rebound toward $56 and potentially $57 to $58. Bitcoin confirms its separate upside setup with a daily close above $87,200 to $87,300.
Bear Case
The immediate equity risks are the resistance zones in NVIDIA and SpaceX, alongside the prospect of a significant S&P 500 correction after an advance toward 8,000 or slightly above. Gold would weaken with a confirmed daily breakdown below $4,100, bringing $3,950 and potentially $3,500 into view. Silver would face further downside below $59.50, with $55 and potentially $50 or lower becoming relevant, while Bitcoin would weaken beneath $81,300. An oil recovery above broken support would weaken its bearish setup, and renewed yield pressure would challenge the relief currently helping stocks.
What to Watch Next
I am watching whether oil finishes below its broken support and whether yields continue retreating from 5.28% to 5.3%. For equities, the important tests are the S&P 500’s previous high, NVIDIA’s $255 to $256 zone, and SpaceX’s current resistance followed by $187. In commodities, I want to see gold and silver defend support and natural gas follow through toward resistance. For Bitcoin, the daily close around $87,200 to $87,300, or a return to $81,300, will tell me whether the next move is confirming or weakening.
Bottom Line
The central relationship is simple: lower yields and falling oil are giving stocks room to advance. That relief also helps explain gold’s bounce, while individual equities and Bitcoin still need to confirm their own setups. Stay patient, respect the levels, and let the closes confirm the next move.
