Falling Treasury Yields Fuel Tech Rally as Breakout Tests Loom
Can Falling Yields Keep the Tech Rally Going?
Stocks are rallying as the sharp drop in the U.S. 10 Year Treasury Yield (TNX) takes pressure off technology, semiconductors, precious metals, and other rate-sensitive assets. The opportunity is improving, but several major indexes and individual stocks are now approaching confirmation levels and resistance, so the next move depends on whether buyers can follow through rather than simply chase today’s strength.
In One Minute
The S&P 500 Index (SPX) gained 1.13%, while semiconductor stocks led an even higher-risk move as Treasury yields came down. Federal Reserve policy remains the main macro issue, especially with the possibility of additional rate hikes still in play, but the market is responding positively as long-dated bonds attract buyers and the 10-year yield retreats.
The next test is follow-through. The S&P 500 and Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) both need another strong close; VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) is approaching its 50-day moving average at $565.48, and the 10-year yield still has support at 4.886% before 4.809%. Bitcoin (BTC) is testing resistance around the middle of its declining channel, while gold, silver, Apple, Intel, AMD, HPE, and SMCI are all working through important technical levels.
The Setup
The larger market relationship is fairly simple right now: lower long-term Treasury yields are helping risk assets breathe.
The market initially reacted negatively to the possibility of additional rate hikes after beginning the year expecting no hikes and looking instead for cuts. The discussion now includes another hike this year and even the possibility of reaching three hikes. That initially spooked stocks.
As the market digested the Federal Reserve message and gave it more credibility on inflation, investors bought long-dated bonds. That pushed the 10-year yield lower and helped fuel the rally.
Options expiration is also approaching, so some of the short-term price movement can come from institutions managing positions around expiring contracts. Still, the 10-year yield remains the main driver.
The U.S. 10 Year Treasury Yield (TNX) fell sharply, but I still expect it to stay closer to the 5% area rather than simply collapsing toward 4.809%. Before the discussion of two hikes, the cleaner setup looked like sideways consolidation. With two hikes now part of the picture, 5.021% becomes more important.
The yield remains inside an inclining parallel channel. The first support level is 4.886%, followed by 4.809%. A pullback into 4.886% followed by a bounce would create a path back toward 5.021%.
As long as yields keep falling, technology, gold, silver, and other assets that have been pressured by higher rates can continue benefiting.
What Changed
The S&P 500 Index (SPX) gained 1.13% and bounced from a horizontal trend line connected to the previous all-time high from June. That level has been the battleground over the previous four trading days. Today, price gapped higher, pulled back into that area, and bounced.
Near-term resistance is the September 11 gap fill. The important confirmation now is a close above today’s candle. That would help separate the S&P 500 from the recent downward trajectory. If the move continues, medium-term upside resistance sits around 770 on the declining trend line at the top of the structure.
The Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was even stronger. QQQ gapped above a prior gap fill, held the move, and closed above a declining trend line. Price sold down intraday, but it never filled the previous day’s gap.
The next confirmation is another daily close above today’s candle. If that happens, the next declining trend line target is around $727.
Semiconductors were one of the strongest areas of the market. The VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) gained 2.76% and moved back above a declining trend line.
The major test is the 50-day moving average at $565.48. SMH has moved above this average before but failed to hold it. It has also previously moved above the declining trend line for one candle and then fallen back underneath it.
That makes the next session important. A second push higher could put SMH directly against the 50 day moving average, and holding above that level would strengthen the near term bullish case for semiconductors and potentially the broader market.
Gold Futures (GC) rallied 1.88%. Gold had broken below its inclining parallel channel and spent several months underneath it, but the breakdown never gained enough separation, and price never closed below the candle that originally broke the level.
Gold has now moved back inside the channel. That invalidates the prior breakdown and puts the near-term setup back on the bullish side. The first resistance level is $4,575.
Silver Futures (SI) also reversed an attempted breakdown. A potential head and shoulders pattern never extended lower. Price moved below the neckline, back above it, then underneath again, but never separated enough to confirm the bearish measured move.
That downside target into the $57 to $56 consolidation range is now off the table. Silver has moved back through the neckline, and the next resistance level is $67.99.
West Texas Intermediate Crude Oil Futures (CL) declined earlier along with the 10-year yield but then rallied back into its prior consolidation. With 29 minutes remaining in the session, price was still inside the surrounding candle range, so the structure remained consolidation rather than a confirmed breakout or breakdown.
Oil had already experienced a two-day dip. A close back inside the prior range keeps the structure in bullish consolidation. If oil does move lower, previous pivot highs from March 2026 and June 2026 become the next important area of contention.
Technology and artificial intelligence-related stocks also delivered several important setups.
Super Micro Computer Inc. (SMCI) gained 9.5%. Even after that move, the price remains inside the broader range that formed after the sharp August advance into the upper 50% of a declining parallel channel.
The structure still looks like bullish consolidation. The first resistance is the upper channel boundary at $42.05.
Beyond that, two intersecting trend lines create a much more important resistance zone around $47.41. One connects the October 9 pivot with June 2. The second connects June 23 with August 13. Their intersection creates an area where sellers could become much more aggressive.
SMCI also has company-specific legal risk hanging over the stock. U.S. litigation continues over accusations involving restricted chips being sold in Asia, repackaged, and then sold into China.
That matters because SMCI is already up nearly 106% from its March low and over about 72% from the more recent July bounce. Those gains create plenty of room for profit taking, especially near $47.41.
Intel Corporation (INTC) gained 7.67% and closed above a declining trend line. Falling Treasury yields helped, and a Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS) projection that the global artificial intelligence server market could reach $1.3 trillion by 2030 added another catalyst for semiconductor buying.
Intel now needs another daily close above today’s candle. If it gets that confirmation, the next resistance level is $112.07. A confirmed breakout would then create a breakout retrace setup, where the cleaner opportunity comes from waiting for price to pull back and seeing whether buyers defend the breakout area.
Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) has a similar setup. This is still based on one candle, so confirmation matters. A close above today’s candle could send price toward resistance at $566.41.
If AMD reaches that area, I would rather see a pullback than chase the initial move. If the retrace holds and buyers return, the stock could continue toward new all-time highs.
Hewlett Packard Enterprise Company (HPE) is also testing a major breakout area. The stock had been relatively dormant since 2016 before accelerating sharply in April of this year as investors focused on its artificial intelligence potential.
HPE has now tested the $60 to $62 area four times. The specific breakout level is $61.85. A daily close above $61.85 would put HPE on near-term breakout watch.
Apple Inc. (AAPL) is also benefiting from the artificial intelligence theme. Apple is developing artificial intelligence inference servers around its new M8 Ultra chip and plans to work with Nvidia Corporation (NVDA) as part of that effort.
Apple remains inside an inclining parallel channel dating back to January 2023. Price touched the lower boundary, later reached the upper boundary, pierced the lower boundary during the Liberation Day news in April 2025, recovered, returned to the 50% area, and has since continued working near the upper end of the structure.
The daily chart has now produced a breakout retrace setup. Apple held the area, bounced, and filled the gap tied to the candle that produced the previous all-time high.
The all-time highs are close. The next likely destination and major near- to medium-term resistance is around $350.
Digital Assets and Crypto
Bitcoin (BTC) participated in the rally and remains inside a declining parallel channel that recently caught the lows.
Bitcoin already completed the measured move from an inverse head and shoulders pattern at $76,116. After reaching that target, price moved into a very clean consolidation range, repeatedly bouncing between the lower and upper boundaries.
One of the most important candles in that structure had a low of $75,538. A later candle traded below that level but closed at $75,584, exactly $50 above the prior low.
That close mattered because it increased the probability that Bitcoin would maintain the range rather than break down. Price has since rallied.
Bitcoin is now running into resistance near the 50% area of the declining parallel channel. That area was around $76,767, while the corresponding level for tomorrow is $76,535.
A clean move above $76,535 would open room for Bitcoin to attack $78,362.
So the crypto setup remains constructive, but this is another market where confirmation matters. Bitcoin preserved the range, completed its earlier measured move, and is now testing the middle of the declining channel. The next question is whether buyers can clear that resistance and hold above it.
Why It Matters
The same relationship is connecting nearly every major part of this market.
When the 10 year yield falls, pressure comes off technology and semiconductors. That is helping the S&P 500, QQQ, SMH, Intel, AMD, HPE, Apple, and SMCI.
Lower yields are also helping gold and silver recover important technical structures. Gold is back inside its channel, and silver has invalidated its bearish measured move.
Bitcoin is responding positively as well, but it still has to clear the middle of its declining channel.
Oil is slightly different because it is still working through consolidation, but it has not confirmed a larger breakdown.
That is why the next session matters. We have plenty of strong candles, but several assets now need a second day of confirmation.
Key Levels
| Asset | Current Area | Support | Resistance or Target | What Matters |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 Index (SPX) | Relief rally, up 1.13% | Horizontal June high trend line | September 11 gap fill, then 770 | Close above today’s candle |
| Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) | Above gap fill and declining trend line | Prior breakout area | $727 | Another close above today’s candle |
| U.S. 10 Year Treasury Yield (TNX) | Falling inside declining channel | 4.886%, then 4.809% | 5.021% | Yield direction remains the main macro driver |
| VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) | Up 2.76% | Declining trend line breakout area | $565.48 | 50-day moving average is the key test |
| Gold Futures (GC) | Back inside parallel channel, up 1.88% | Channel structure | $4,575 | Prior breakdown is invalidated |
| Silver Futures (SI) | Bearish pattern invalidated | Prior neckline area | $67.99 | $57 to $56 downside target is off the table |
| West Texas Intermediate Crude Oil Futures (CL) | Consolidation | March and June 2026 pivot area | Prior pivot resistance and 50% channel area | Watch whether consolidation holds |
| Super Micro Computer Inc. (SMCI) | Up 9.5% | Bullish consolidation range | $42.05, then $47.41 | Watch for profit-taking near resistance |
| Intel Corporation (INTC) | Up 7.67%, trend line breakout | Breakout area | $112.07 | Needs another close above today’s candle |
| Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) | Potential breakout | Breakout area | $566.41 | Confirmation first, retrace second |
| Hewlett Packard Enterprise Company (HPE) | Testing repeated resistance | Existing range | $61.85 | Daily close above creates breakout setup |
| Apple Inc. (AAPL) | Breakout retrace and bounce | Upper channel structure | Around $350 | All-time highs remain close |
| Bitcoin (BTC) | Testing 50% of declining channel | $75,538 structure, $75,584 close | $76,535, then $78,362 | Needs to clear channel resistance |
The most important levels for the broader market are still the 10-year yield at 4.886% and 5.021%, SMH at its $565.48 moving average, and the next confirmation candles on the S&P 500 and QQQ. Bitcoin at $76,535 is the equivalent test on the crypto side.
Bull Case
For the bullish case to strengthen, the S&P 500 and QQQ need another close above today’s candles. That would give both indexes more separation from their recent declining structures.
SMH needs to continue higher and challenge the 50-day moving average at $565.48. Holding above that level would strengthen risk on momentum across semiconductors.
Gold needs to remain inside its recovered channel, while silver needs to continue holding above the failed head and shoulders breakdown structure.
SMCI needs to clear $42.05 before challenging $47.41. Intel needs another strong close before $112.07 becomes the next target. AMD needs confirmation above today’s candle before $566.41 comes into play. HPE needs a daily close above $61.85. Apple needs to continue holding the upper channel structure as it works toward the $350 area.
Bitcoin needs to clear $76,535 and hold above the middle of its declining channel. That would open the path toward $78,362.
Bear Case
The main risk is that today’s strength turns into another one-day move without follow-through.
SMH has done that before, moving above its declining trend line for one candle and then falling back underneath it. If that happens again, the semiconductor breakout loses credibility.
The 10-year yield is another major risk. If the decline stops and yields rebound toward 5.021%, the same technology, semiconductor, gold, and silver trades benefiting today could come back under pressure.
Gold would weaken if it loses the recovered channel again. Silver would become more vulnerable if the failed head and shoulders structure begins rebuilding, although the previous $57 to $56 measured move is currently off the table.
SMCI faces both technical resistance and legal risk, with $42.05 and $47.41 likely to attract sellers and profit takers.
Bitcoin would weaken if it fails at the 50% channel area and starts losing the range structure that was preserved by the $75,584 close above the prior $75,538 low.
What to Watch Next
The first thing I am watching is the 10-year yield. A move toward 4.886% followed by a bounce could put 5.021% back into play, while continued yield weakness would keep supporting technology, semiconductors, gold, and silver.
Next, watch the confirmation candles. The S&P 500, QQQ, SMH, Intel, and AMD all need follow-through.
SMH at $565.48 may be especially important because that 50-day moving average has repeatedly stopped previous attempts.
HPE needs $61.85. Apple is working toward the $350 area. SMCI has $42.05 first and then $47.41.
Gold has $4,575 as its first resistance. Silver has $67.99.
Bitcoin has $76,535 as the immediate hurdle, followed by $78,362.
Bottom Line
The market is rallying because lower Treasury yields are relieving pressure across stocks, semiconductors, precious metals, and Bitcoin, but most of these moves are now entering areas where confirmation matters more than excitement.
The 10 year yield remains the central market variable, while the S&P 500, QQQ, SMH, Bitcoin, and several technology names all need to prove that today’s strength can continue beyond a single session.
The opportunity is improving, but this is exactly where patience and price discipline matter most: let the breakouts confirm, respect the resistance levels, and avoid chasing price simply because the first move already happened.
