Falling Oil and Yields Put S&P 500 Breakout Within Reach
Can Falling Oil and Yields Push the S&P 500 Above 7,700?
Stocks are pushing higher to start the week, with S&P 500 E-mini futures (ES1!) up 0.65%, or about 50.5 points, as falling oil and easing Treasury yields give risk assets some breathing room. The bigger question now is whether that combination is strong enough to push the S&P 500 Index (SPX) through its bull flag breakout area above 7,700 while Bitcoin tests an important resistance zone of its own.
In One Minute
The market still has a bullish short-term setup. The S&P 500 is pressing toward a breakout above roughly 7,700, with 7,900 to 8,000 in play if that move confirms. At the same time, the U.S. Government Bonds 10 Year Yield (US10Y) is sitting just below major resistance around 5.04%, while West Texas Intermediate Crude Oil (USOIL) has fallen to $93.09 after rejecting the $105 area. Bitcoin U.S. Dollar (BTCUSD) has already made a higher high and is now testing $85,000 to $87,000 resistance. The opportunity is there, but several markets are sitting directly at decision points, so confirmation matters more than chasing.
The Setup
The broader setup still comes down to oil, Treasury yields, Federal Reserve policy, and technical market structure.
The S&P briefly fell into its neutral zone after the Federal Reserve delivered a more hawkish message last week, but that initial selloff did not hold. Stocks recovered Thursday strongly, extended the move Friday, and futures are higher again to begin the week. The daily chart is still forming a bull flag, with price consolidating in the upper half of the previous advance while holding the lower boundary of the pattern.
The Federal Reserve matters here because a tougher stance on inflation can affect different parts of the yield curve differently. The Fed directly controls the short end, but the long end also reflects how much inflation and fiscal risk investors believe they are taking. If investors become more confident that inflation is being addressed, they may accept lower yields on longer maturity Treasury debt.
That brings me to the 10 Year Treasury yield. It is at 4.963%, just below its recent 5.041% high and almost directly underneath major resistance at 5.042%. That creates a potential double top area. The next major lower reference point is 4.322%.
The U.S. Dollar Currency Index (DXY) is also fractionally higher but sitting near significant chart resistance. Put those relationships together, and the message is fairly simple: lower oil and lower yields help equities, while renewed strength in either would make this breakout harder.
What Changed
The S&P 500 is now within striking distance of its descending resistance line. A clean break above just over 7,700 would confirm the bull flag and open the door toward roughly 7,900 to 8,000. Until that line actually breaks, though, this is still a setup, not a confirmed breakout.
Oil has become one of the biggest variables. West Texas Intermediate crude is at $93.09 after recently trading above $100 and rejecting roughly $105. The immediate downside path is toward approximately $90 and potentially $85. The next major horizontal support is $78.00, followed by much deeper structural levels at $60.00 and $55.20.
The market is also pricing the possibility that energy flow conditions around the Strait of Hormuz improve while diplomacy reduces some of the pressure surrounding crude. Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled to visit the United States from September 23 through September 25 and meet President Donald Trump, adding another potential geopolitical catalyst this week. (China Foreign Affairs)
Gold CFD (GOLD) has broken out of its previous descending formation and is now moving inside an ascending parallel channel. That structure still leans upward, but the upper boundary is capping price. A move back toward $4,800 remains possible, while the larger technical question is whether gold can eventually break above that channel rather than continue moving back and forth inside it.
Silver Spot Price (XAGUSD) is behaving similarly. It remains inside parallel boundaries and is much more range-bound than directional. The next meaningful signal comes when price finally breaks either the upper or lower side of that range.
Natural Gas Futures (NG1!) are even more compressed. Natural gas has been stuck in a tight sideways range going back to April, and arguably as far back as February. I still see the potential for a larger move as winter approaches, but the chart has not confirmed which direction that break will take.
Technology is also improving. Micron Technology, Inc. (MU) is gapping higher, with the next target at the 1150 level. That area matters because the gap fill lines up almost exactly with the 0.786 Fibonacci retracement. If Micron reaches that confluence, it becomes a potential resistance and short setup rather than a place I would want to chase higher.
SanDisk Corporation (SNDK) gained more than 10% Friday and is trying to clear a descending trendline connecting previous highs. The structure also resembles a cup and handle. If the breakout holds, the next upside area is around 2275. One possibility is that large option positions into Friday's expiration had been suppressing some of these semiconductor moves. With those contracts now expired, that pressure may have eased, but that remains a hypothesis rather than something I would treat as confirmed.
Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) has another clean setup. The daily chart shows a strong flagpole followed by a bull flag, with price continuing to hold the rising lower boundary. What I want to see now is a break above the upper consolidation area.
Tesla, Inc. (TSLA) is still trading inside a broad descending channel. It bounced sharply from the lower channel boundary, and the next technical objective is just above $400. That would bring Tesla back toward the descending resistance line, where the real decision will be whether buyers can finally break through or whether price gets rejected again.
The earnings calendar is relatively quiet for now. Costco Wholesale Corporation (COST) reports later this week, and KB Home (KBH) will be useful for reading conditions in housing. We are still roughly three weeks away from the broader earnings cycle picking up again, with banks beginning around mid-October and the major mega-cap companies following.
Digital Assets and Crypto
Bitcoin is one of the strongest technical developments in this entire setup.
The critical level during the recent weakness was $75,500. Bitcoin pierced that area intraday, but the daily close held, keeping the larger bullish structure intact. From there, Bitcoin rallied roughly $10,000 and has now moved above the previous major rebound high, giving us a higher high on the daily chart.
That does not mean Bitcoin is going straight back to its previous all-time highs. What it does mean is that the structure has changed enough to consider the possibility that the major low is already in and a new bullish phase is developing.
Bitcoin is currently shown at $85,148.67 after reaching $85,457.35. It has already cleared $82,626.49 and is now directly inside the larger $85,000 to $87,000 resistance zone.
That is the immediate test. If Bitcoin establishes itself above $87,000, the next major upside objective is approximately $97,000. If it cannot clear this area, consolidation or a pullback would fit the current structure without automatically destroying the larger bullish case.
Support is just as important. The original technical line remains near $75,500, with nearby chart support at $75,723.42. Below that, the 200 day moving average is at $70,271.18. Deeper support sits at $62,458.10 and $58,950.59, with the major chart low at $57,717.55.
There is also a policy backdrop. The Senate failed to invoke cloture on the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act on September 15 by a 49 to 50 vote, delaying progress on the legislation. Bitcoin weakened around that setback but still held its major technical support and recovered sharply afterward. (U.S. Senate)
The key here is discipline. Bitcoin has made a higher high, but it has also run directly into resistance. I would rather see how price behaves around $85,000 to $87,000 than chase a nearly $10,000 move after it has already happened.
Why It Matters
These markets are all connected right now.
If crude continues moving toward $90 or $85 and the 10 Year Treasury yield rejects the 5.04% area, that removes two pressures from equities at the same time. That would give the S&P 500 a much cleaner environment to break through 7,700.
If yields instead break above 5.042% or oil turns sharply higher again, the equity breakout becomes more difficult.
Gold and silver are still behaving more like range markets, while Bitcoin has already produced a meaningful structural change through its higher high. Technology is beginning to improve as well, but Micron, SanDisk, Microsoft, and Tesla all still have technical levels that need confirmation before those setups become more convincing.
Key Levels
| Asset | Current Area | Support | Resistance or Target | What Matters |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 Index (SPX) | Near breakout | Neutral zone | Above 7,700, then 7,900 to 8,000 | Bull flag needs confirmation |
| U.S. 10 Year Yield (US10Y) | 4.963% | 4.322% | 5.041% to 5.042% | Potential double top |
| WTI Crude Oil (USOIL) | $93.09 | $90, $85, $78.00, $60.00, $55.20 | Roughly $105 recent rejection | Lower oil supports equities |
| Gold (GOLD) | Ascending channel | Lower channel boundary | $4,800, then upper channel | Still range constrained |
| Bitcoin (BTCUSD) | $85,148.67 | $75,723.42, $75,500, $70,271.18, $62,458.10, $58,950.59, $57,717.55 | $85,000 to $87,000, then $97,000 | Higher high already confirmed |
| Micron (MU) | Gapping higher | 1150 | Gap fill and 0.786 Fibonacci confluence | |
| Sandisk (SNDK) | Breakout attempt | Descending trendline area | 2275 | Cup and handle breakout |
| Tesla (TSLA) | Recovering inside channel | Lower channel boundary | Just above $400 | Test of descending resistance |
The most important levels for the broader market are S&P 500 resistance above 7,700, the 10 Year yield near 5.04%, crude around $90 to $85, and Bitcoin at $85,000 to $87,000.
Bull Case
For stocks, the cleanest bullish scenario is an S&P 500 breakout above 7,700 while crude keeps moving lower and the 10 Year yield rejects the 5.04% area. That would keep 7,900 to 8,000 in play.
For Bitcoin, holding above $75,500 to $75,723.42 keeps the larger recovery intact, while a confirmed move through $87,000 would put approximately $97,000 back in focus.
Gold remains constructive while it holds its ascending channel, but the stronger signal would come from eventually clearing the upper boundary. Silver needs the same kind of breakout from its parallel range.
Micron can continue toward 1150, Sandisk can extend toward 2275 if its breakout holds, Microsoft needs to clear the top of its bull flag, and Tesla has room toward just above $400 before confronting its descending resistance line.
Natural gas still has the potential to break out of its long compression as winter approaches, but direction remains unconfirmed.
Bear Case
The first warning for equities would be another rejection at S&P 500 resistance combined with renewed strength in oil or Treasury yields. A sustained break above 5.042% on the 10 Year would invalidate the immediate double top idea and increase pressure on the broader equity setup.
Oil reversing back toward its recent highs would also remove one of the current bullish tailwinds.
Bitcoin can reject from $85,000 to $87,000 without destroying the broader structure, but losing $75,500 to $75,723.42 would materially weaken the bullish case. Below that, $70,271.18 becomes important, followed by $62,458.10, $58,950.59, and ultimately $57,717.55.
Micron becomes more interesting as a potential short if it reaches the 1150 resistance and Fibonacci confluence and then rejects. Tesla faces the same decision near the descending trendline above $400. Gold and silver would weaken if their lower channel boundaries fail, while natural gas still has no confirmed direction out of its long range.
What to Watch Next
The first thing I am watching is whether the S&P actually confirms the breakout above 7,700. Right behind that is the 10 Year Treasury yield near 5.04% and whether crude continues toward $90 or $85.
Bitcoin's $85,000 to $87,000 zone is the next major crypto decision point. Above it, $97,000 becomes the next objective. Below it, I want to see how well the new support structure holds.
For individual stocks, Micron's 1150 target, SanDisk's descending trendline breakout, Microsoft's bull flag, and Tesla's move toward resistance above $400 all deserve attention.
Costco and KB Home are the main earnings names on the near term calendar, while the broader earnings cycle starts becoming more important again around mid October.
Geopolitically, the September 23 through September 25 Xi visit and meeting with President Trump remain another catalyst to watch because of its potential implications for trade, diplomacy, and energy expectations. (China Foreign Affairs)

Bottom Line
The market still has a bullish short-term structure, but the next move depends heavily on whether falling oil and easing Treasury yields continue to support risk assets. The S&P needs to clear 7,700, the 10 Year yield needs to respect resistance near 5.04%, and Bitcoin needs to work through $85,000 to $87,000 before its next leg becomes clearer.
There is no reason to chase any of these moves. Let resistance break, let support prove itself, and make price confirm the trade before committing to the next move.
