Falling Oil and Softer Yields Fuel a Technology Led Stock Rally
Can Falling Oil and Softer Yields Keep the Stock Rally Going?
Stocks are pushing sharply higher, with the S&P 500 Index (SPX) up 1.36% during the session and later around 1.4%, while the Nasdaq Composite Index (COMP) is up more than 2% as falling oil prices, slightly lower Treasury yields, and renewed technology strength improve risk appetite. The bigger question now is whether that combination can keep supporting equities while oil tests support, metals remain trapped in ranges, and Bitcoin (BTC) works through resistance after a major technical breakout.
In One Minute
The market remains technically bullish as long as the S&P 500 holds above its upper neutral zone trend line, with approximately 8,000 still the larger upside target. West Texas Intermediate Crude Oil (WTI) has fallen roughly 4.5% to $95.60 after trading near $107 and is now approaching important support around $94 to $95. Technology remains one of the strongest areas, including Meta Platforms, Inc. (META), while gold and silver remain range-bound. Bitcoin has produced the biggest structural change, repeatedly defending $75,500 before making a new higher high, shifting the focus toward disciplined buying on pullbacks rather than chasing the current move.
The Setup
The broader equity structure remains constructive. The S&P 500 has been holding above its upper neutral zone, which keeps the market bullish. Movement between the upper and lower boundaries would put the index back into a neutral structure, while a break below the lower boundary would turn the setup bearish.
The technical pattern behind the recent strength is a bull flag. The S&P 500 made a sharp move higher, then consolidated sideways to slightly lower without giving back the larger advance. That tells me profit-taking has been absorbed by buyers underneath the market.
That resilience has been especially important because Treasury yields reached 5%, the Federal Reserve raised rates, geopolitical tensions involving Iran remained elevated, and oil traded above $100 per barrel. Even with those pressures, the S&P 500 stayed only 2% to 3% below its record high.
What Changed
The S&P 500 briefly closed below its bullish boundary following the Federal Reserve announcement, when the policy message was notably hawkish and raised the possibility of additional rate increases. The market initially reacted negatively, but stocks recovered the following session and continued higher.
Oil is also changing the equation. West Texas Intermediate is down about 4.5% to $95.60 after falling from roughly $107 per barrel. More oil is moving through the Strait of Hormuz than six months ago, a damaged Saudi Arabian pipeline is returning, and expectations around discussions involving China, the United States, and Iran are adding to hopes that geopolitical pressure on energy markets could ease.
The United States 10 Year Treasury Yield (TNX) is moving slightly lower alongside oil. It is not a major decline, but lower energy prices and softer yields are helping equities.
Technology is responding quickly. Meta recently broke out and continues moving sharply higher rather than delivering the short-term pullback I was watching for. The stock is now approaching an important gap fill above the current price. Artificial intelligence-related names and companies tied to data center investment are also participating in the rally.
Gold (XAU) remains rangebound between established trend lines. I expect sideways to gradually higher movement while that range holds, but a break below the lower trend line could open a much deeper move toward $4,000.
Silver (XAG) is behaving similarly. Parallel trend lines continue to contain both sides of the market. A break below the lower boundary would weaken the bullish structure, while a breakout through the upper boundary could produce a much stronger upside move.
Digital Assets and Crypto
Bitcoin is the standout.
The September 15 Senate cloture vote needed to advance the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act failed 49 to 50, leaving the legislation unable to move forward at that stage. Bitcoin reacted negatively, but the chart did something far more important: it did not break and close below $75,500.
That $75,500 level was tested again following the Federal Reserve announcement, and once again Bitcoin held.
That matters because Bitcoin was absorbing bad news without breaking support. Stocks were falling following the Fed decision, gold was selling off, and Bitcoin still managed to finish higher. That relative strength helped set up the short squeeze that followed.
Bitcoin has now moved above the previous rally high and created a new higher high. For me, that changes the larger structure. The previous bear market low is now in place, and the bear market is over.
That does not mean Bitcoin goes straight higher or immediately returns to record highs. A severe S&P 500 decline of approximately 30% could still create enough pressure to challenge those Bitcoin lows.
I am also not interested in chasing Bitcoin after this surge. There is substantial resistance overhead. The opportunity is on pullbacks into support. With the higher high now established, I am treating those pullbacks as potential buying opportunities rather than automatically expecting new lows.
Why It Matters
The important relationship right now is straightforward: oil is falling, Treasury yields are easing slightly, and technology is responding positively.
That combination reduces some of the pressure that had been sitting on equities. It also helps explain why the S&P 500 has remained resilient despite rates, geopolitical risk, and previously elevated energy prices.
At the same time, gold and silver are telling us not every asset is breaking out. Both metals remain trapped inside technical ranges, so patience matters there.
Bitcoin is different. Its repeated defense of $75,500 followed by a higher high represents an actual change in market structure.
Key Levels
| Asset | Current Area | Support | Resistance or Target | What Matters |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 Index (SPX) | Up 1.36%, later around 1.4% | Upper neutral zone trend line, then lower neutral boundary | Approximately 8,000 | Holding above the upper neutral zone keeps the structure bullish |
| Nasdaq Composite Index (COMP) | Up more than 2% | Technology is leading the broader move | ||
| West Texas Intermediate Crude Oil (WTI) | $95.60, also trading around $95.70 | $94 to $95 | Previous resistance trend line | Oil has fallen from approximately $107 and is now testing first major support |
| Gold (XAU) | Rangebound | Lower trend line | Upper trend line | A downside break could open a move toward $4,000 |
| Silver (XAG) | Inside parallel trend lines | Lower channel boundary | Upper channel boundary | An upside break could trigger a much stronger move |
| Meta Platforms, Inc. (META) | Surging after breakout | Major gap fill | Momentum remains strong while the stock approaches the gap | |
| Bitcoin (BTC) | New higher high | $75,500 | Significant resistance overhead | Repeated defense of $75,500 and the higher high changed the larger structure |
The two levels I am watching most closely are the S&P 500 upper neutral zone and Bitcoin at $75,500. The first keeps the broader equity structure bullish, while the second remains the level that defined Bitcoin's structural reversal.
Bull Case
For equities, the bull case remains intact while the S&P 500 holds above its upper neutral zone. Continued strength in technology, slightly lower Treasury yields, and softer oil would keep supporting that structure. The larger S&P 500 target remains approximately 8,000, potentially before the midterm elections, but at least above 8,000 into year-end if the technical structure continues to hold.
For Meta, continued momentum keeps the major gap fill in focus.
For gold, holding the lower trend line keeps the range intact. Silver becomes much more interesting if it breaks above the upper boundary of its parallel channel.
For Bitcoin, the higher high is the critical confirmation. Pullbacks into support can now be treated as potential buying opportunities, with $75,500 remaining the major reference point.
Bear Case
The equity setup weakens if the S&P 500 falls back through the upper neutral zone and deteriorates further if it breaks below the lower boundary.
Oil could bounce from $94 to $95 because that is the first major technical support area. That means the recent decline should not be chased blindly even though the broader expectation remains for oil to eventually move lower.
Gold becomes vulnerable if its lower trend line fails, with $4,000 becoming the important downside level. Silver also weakens if it breaks below the lower side of its parallel channel.
Bitcoin still faces significant resistance overhead. The bear market structure has changed, but that does not eliminate volatility. A roughly 30% decline in the S&P 500 would represent the kind of severe broader market pressure that could put Bitcoin's previous lows back at risk.
What to Watch Next
Watch whether the S&P 500 continues holding its upper neutral zone after the latest breakout, and whether oil can stabilize or bounce from $94 to $95.
Keep an eye on Treasury yields as oil moves, because even a modest decline in yields is helping technology. Meta's approach toward its gap fill will also show whether the current technology momentum can continue.
For metals, the trend line boundaries matter more than movement inside the ranges. Gold needs to hold its lower trend line, while silver needs an upper channel breakout for a stronger bullish move.
For Bitcoin, resistance overhead is the immediate test, but the more important opportunity comes if price pulls back toward support without invalidating the new higher high structure.
Bottom Line
The most important relationship remains falling oil, slightly softer Treasury yields, and stronger technology, with the S&P 500 still holding a bullish technical structure. Oil is now close to $94 to $95 support, gold and silver remain rangebound, and Bitcoin has shifted structurally after defending $75,500 and producing a new higher high. The market is giving us clearer setups, but this is still a market where patience matters: respect support, respect resistance, and let price come to you.
