Bitcoin Stalls Below $87,500, Keeping Its $97,000 Upside Target on Hold
Can Bitcoin break above $87,500 while holding support at $81,500?
Bitcoin (BTC) is moving sideways after repeatedly stalling at resistance, keeping its next advance on hold. The broader crypto setup still has room to move higher, but whether support holds will determine if this consolidation ends in a breakout or another decline.
In One Minute
The main opportunity is Bitcoin’s intact bull flag, with a break above $87,500 opening the way toward approximately $97,000. The biggest risk is a failure at $81,500, which would bring $75,500 into play and potentially $67,000 if that support breaks. Ether also has a bullish setup to defend, while Zcash needs more caution and Solana needs to hold support. This week could bring the move that settles those competing scenarios.
The Setup
Right now, the market is waiting for price to make the decision. Bitcoin has paused after a strong advance, and that sideways movement still fits a bullish continuation pattern. But an intact pattern is only a setup. Buyers need to clear resistance to activate the upside, and they need to defend support to keep that opportunity alive. Until one of those boundaries breaks, patience matters more than anticipating the direction.
What Changed
Bitcoin has done relatively little over the past couple of weeks. Repeated failures near the same resistance area have left the breakout unresolved. Elsewhere, Ether is trying to preserve its bullish structure after an earlier breakout. Zcash has pulled back significantly after a substantial rally, creating a possible bearish formation. Solana still looks constructive, with its downside support remaining the key condition.
Digital Assets and Crypto
The highs from September 20th, September 22nd, and October 1st all stalled around $87,370. That gives us a clear resistance area, with $87,500 as the practical breakout threshold. If Bitcoin breaks above $87,500, buying should pick up, and the next upside objective is approximately $97,000. That target lines up with a previous price peak and a measured move, giving us two chart references pointing toward the same area.
The earlier advance measured 31.44%, or approximately $20,000. Projecting a similar advance after this consolidation puts the target around $97,000. That is the upside scenario if resistance breaks. Below the market, $81,500 is the pivot I’m watching. Holding above it keeps the bullish breakout opportunity intact. Losing it opens the door to $75,500, and that level needs to hold. If it fails, the next downside level is $67,000.
So Bitcoin remains caught between support at $81,500 and resistance around $87,370 to $87,500. A break of either boundary would tell us which scenario deserves priority.
Ethereum (ETH) needs to hold $2,545, particularly on a daily closing basis. That level previously acted as resistance. Price repeatedly tested it, pushed above it, and pulled back before finally breaking through and advancing. Now buyers need to defend it as support.
A daily close below $2,545 would damage the bullish setup and likely send price toward $2,350. If that support breaks too, the next downside level is $1,960. On the upside, Ether has stalled at resistance. Clearing that barrier would put $3,000, a previous price peak, in focus. Until then, holding $2,545 is the immediate requirement.
Zcash (ZEC) has pulled back sharply after a substantial advance. I’m watching whether the decline is followed by a bear flag, a pause that could lead to another move lower. The alternative is a rebound toward the previous high, where a retest could form a double top.
That leaves two possibilities to watch: further weakness from the developing bearish pattern, or a recovery back toward the earlier peak. The earlier short position is closed after a large gain. For now, the size of the preceding rally calls for caution, and I’m waiting for the next move to clarify the trade.
Solana (SOL) still has a bullish pattern and looks constructive at this stage. The condition is straightforward: downside support needs to hold. If that support breaks, the bullish setup weakens, and a sharper decline becomes the risk. That is why the exit level matters just as much as the upside opportunity when holding a bullish position.
Why It Matters
These setups give us conditions to follow instead of reasons to chase. Bitcoin and Ether can still move higher, but their support levels tell us when that view needs to change. Execution matters too. A limit order lets you specify the price you are willing to pay, while a stop order can help establish an exit if support fails. Define those decisions before a sudden move forces your hand.
Key Levels
| Asset | Support | Resistance or Target | What Matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin (BTC) | $81,500; $75,500; $67,000 | $87,370 to $87,500; approximately $97,000 | Breaking above $87,500 activates the upside setup; losing $81,500 exposes lower support |
| Ether (ETH) | $2,545; $2,350; $1,960 | $3,000 | A daily close below $2,545 weakens the bullish structure |
| Solana (SOL) | Bullish pattern depends on support holding | ||
| Zcash (ZEC) | Possible bear flag; a rebound toward the previous high could form a double top |
Bitcoin’s $81,500 pivot and $87,500 breakout threshold frame the main decision. For Ether, the daily close around $2,545 matters most.
Bull Case
Bitcoin holds $81,500 and breaks above $87,500, putting approximately $97,000 in play. Ether defends $2,545 and clears its overhead resistance, opening the way toward $3,000. Solana keeps its bullish pattern intact by holding support. Zcash could rebound toward its previous high, although that retest would still need watching for a possible double top.
Bear Case
Bitcoin loses $81,500 and tests $75,500. A failure there brings $67,000 into focus. Ethereum closes below $2,545 and moves toward $2,350, with $1,960 next if that support fails. Zcash’s possible bear flag could lead to further weakness, while a support break would undermine Solana’s bullish pattern.
What to Watch Next
This week, watch Bitcoin’s range boundaries for the move that resolves the consolidation. Follow Ether’s daily close relative to $2,545, whether Zcash’s developing formation leads lower or rebounds, and whether Solana continues to defend support.
Bottom Line
Bitcoin holding $81,500 keeps the bullish opportunity alive, but clearing $87,500 is what opens the path toward approximately $97,000. Ether’s support test adds another condition to watch across crypto. Let price confirm the move, and keep your entry and exit levels clear before you act.
